Just thought I'd give a little feed back that not seeing any of the subforums listed on the main forums listing page I do find a little confusing sometimes cause I can remember posting in a subfoum sometimes but just can't remember where the heck it was. Just thought you might appreciate to hear user feed back on this.

Hey there Duck, I found it confusing when I first started hanging around the Forums but after a bit it becomes like the back of your hand and easy to find your way around.

One useful tool for you might be at the top right of the Forum page is a link "Recently-read topics" although this is not specific to where you have been posting, it might help you remember.

I do think it would be useful for the ocPortal Forum to add a tool that would help users track their topics, something like this:
  • Find all posts by (your name)
  • Find all threads started by (your name)
I have been members of other forums which provide this type of tracking.

Thanks for you input Duck.

Well-settled

One thing that I would like to see as far as the forums are concerned, is to get rid of the "spacer post", or hide it entirely when we click on a forum post.

Ideally, clicking on a link should take you directly to a message but you get used to it. I do not see this in any other forum software that I've used in the past.

I honestly have no clue what you mean? I never noticed any spacer posts and can't find what you might be talking about?

I see them here, as well as on my site from time to time. It's not consistent. It requires you to click-through on them to get to the actual post content. The next time I see one, I will post a screen shot.

Example from the tutorial:
The first post in comment topics is a special 'spacer post'. This is necessary for two reasons…

    * To indicate what content the topic is for
    * To allow the first true post in the topic to be deleted (with ordinary forum topics the first post can not usually be deleted because it is considered as setting the grounds for the topic)

Yup. That is what I am seeing from time to time. If that could be eliminated (or hidden from other than the admin/staff via automatically forwarding to the correct url), that would be more in line with visitor expectations who visit different forums on a regular basis.

The thing that I don't get, is from the main forum screen, when not in an actual forum with content, there is still the ability to post a message, which is inside the main holder of all the forums, but not a forum itself.   Very strange setup IMO.   Not even sure the point of that structure.

I don't see what your talking about can you please post a screenshot? I don't see a way to post a message from the Forum Home Root?

Here it is below.   It appears it is something you can turn off with permissions, or only admins/super-moderators can see/do.   But if you do it, it posts to the 'Forum home' area.    I'd rather just turn it off, maybe there is a setting for that I have not found yet.

I wonder as well if 'track forum' tracks every forum because it is at the root 'forum home' as well.

Oh! I originally was talking about this website (ocPortal.com) and the fact I couldn't see their subforums from forum root so sometimes I couldn't remember where what forum categories were available to me after seeing them once before.  But I could see what your talking about now.

Admin >> Structure >> Forums >> Edit forum >> (choose to 'Edit' Forum home) >> Permissions (override default settings by selecting a 'minus' for 'Make post' & 'Add topic')

Checking back you might find that the system has reset your edit to 'Read-only access', but that effectively gets rid of the 'Add topic' button on Forum Home!

Give it a spin and test it using the SU feature. If it doesn't do precisely what you are after you can always reset to default. Nothing lost!

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

Thanks.  Super moderator was set to be able to post.  Amazingly the icon is still there.  Cleared the caches and reloaded.   Strange.

The forums are a hierarchy, including the root forum ('home forum'). This is how announcements work, you post under the top forum of where you want it to display and make it pinned and cascading. So if you want a forum wide announcement you post in the root forum and do that, or if you want it just in a partial set, you choose a different forum.

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.
