Hello,

I recently had a wireless setup on my network, and ever since then, I've been having problems with my windows server, as well as my IRC server, seeing as both are hosted on my computer. I talked to a few people online, which they had told me I would need to portforward. Due to the recent disconnects on my connection, an ISP technician came to my home to fix the problems, and I had asked him how to portforward, and he had said that portforwarding is not an option with my router as it's encrypted so my computer cannot be connected to? Excuse the n00b in me, but I don't understand a word of that. :P If it is possible, I would like to portforward so I can at least begin using my IRC server again. Any help is appreciated. Thank you. :)

King Regards,
Joe

It sounds like he meant that your wireless router is incapable of port forwarding. In other words, your computer can initiate connections with other ones, opening up a two-way communication – but other computers cannot initiate connections with yours, because the router can't be set up to relay connection requests.

  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.

Ah, ok. So there is no way around this? Both my windows server, and my IRC server are basically useless, correct?

This link will tell you how to configure the port-forwarding for that particular router. Make sure you know which ports you need to be forwarded, and make sure you know the internal I.P. address which you are connected to the router as.

Hope it works if you need me to test it let me know.
I am always on here and a PM away.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.
