Firefox and ocPortal

This is off the ocPortal topic.

I noticed that when I view ocPortal in Firefox that you have a little icon before the site name - in the tabbed window and also in the URL window.

That is so cool :)

I'm thinking its probably a bitmap, which I can make … but what is the size and where do I load it. I would look it up at Firefox, but I'm not even sure what topic it would be under.

Actually, this is a Microsoft technology - when you add a favourite to a site, IE uses that icon as the site picture in the favorites menu. Firefox uses it too, to better effect :).

You just create a favicon.ico file and upload it to your domain root I think.

I guess a warning in your line of work tends tomean 'run for cover'. Fortunately it's not so severe when it comes to computers ;).

In firefox, the favicon.ico is shown when you open the site, in the address bar, and in the tab header.

To add one to your site, just create a gif  (16 by 16 pixels, or 32 by 32 pixels) and upload it.  Then rename it from favicon.gif to favicon.ico

Creating a .gif and renaming the file extension will not work. You'd need to convert the image to a .ico extension. The easiest thing to do would be just to open Adobe Photoshop, create a canvas size of 16x16, make your image, then save the image as favicon.ico. Upload this image to your root directory i.e. 'public_html'.

Not a fair comment, Joe.

Some web hosts don't allow the uploading of 'ico' files, and the only way around that is to upload the file (in binary mode) as a 'gif' and then rename the extension once it is on your server.

I can assure you that that works, because that is precisely how I have to do it.

 :P

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

Not fair? I wasn't meaning to be rude, but renaming the filetype does not always work. What's funny is, if a webhost restricts the uploading of a certain filetype, uploading it with a different extension and then renaming it shouldn't work.

It would say something about 'permission denied', or 'cannot rename to prohibited filetype'. I know when I used to be with hostultra.com, this method did not work, as I was trying to upload a Java Applet for members to access to my IRC Server. The webhost did not allow the uploading of .cab files, and using this method of extention renaming did not work.

Well-settled

Thanx for reminding me, have just uploaded my normal favicon to the OC directory. I should point out this doesn't usually work unless the visitor has saved your site in their favorites - and for some reason it's not working on my OC site, even though I just saved it to favs.. mmm, might work later I guess though have closed and reopened the window a few times.

Oh well, at least it's there, and *should* work :)

Because my site is to help ocPortal can I use the one used on this site?

I run Otaku Play Ground and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

Ok I will make some thing or see if fletch will make it as he did make my logo.

Its funny IPB almost forces you to use theirs but you can change it but by default it is theirs.
