I contacted Chris a bit ago and suggested that members who sponsor features should receive points just as themers and add-on developers receive points for their downloads. All of these activities benefit ocPortal and its users and, so, recognition should be given for all these activities. Chris agreed and, so, people who sponsor a feature will receive points once the project is paid and completed. I think Chris said sponsors will receive 50 points for each support credit paid. This seems like an equitable arrangement that allows people to be rewarded for any ocPortal development or theming activity, including sponsorship. I don't know when the changes will be reflected but expect some shuffling about on the point leader-board.

Of course, just as people now gift points to themers and add-on developers, they should also consider gifting points to sponsors, especially if the feature is something that really benefits them.

The community is vitally important to any project and ocPortal is no different. It is important that we recognize the efforts made by our community members whether it be for sponsorship of features, providing a great theme or useful add-on or offering assistance to another member looking for help (use those like buttons when you see another member helping someone with a problem).

Okay, I'm off my soapbox but I do hope that we can build on this sense of community to grow ocPortal into an ever more powerful and useful tool for both current and future users.

This was an excellent suggestion Bob, and already implemented judging from the bunch of points that made their way to my account. Indeed, there are many ways to give back to ocPortal for such a magnificent product and sponsoring development projects is both brave and vital for its success.

Many thanks to you and Chris for making it happen!

Thanks, Jean. I like that Chris has structured a community that is inclusive – encouraging members to do whatever they can to make ocPortal a better product.

Some seem to lament the size of the community (which is small compared to many others but is growing), but I will take this community over many others that I have been in. First, the product is top-notch, something Chris and his team seem adamant in protecting. Secondly, the community is generous.

Certainly, I would like to see more members more active in the community in whatever capacity they can manage and I believe that we are moving in that direction.

Wow, that was much more of a shuffle than I expected. Still it is good to know that we have several current members who are working hard to see ocPortal improve. Now we just need to see the one inactive member pushed down the list – not because she wasn't helpful in the past but because since the time she left some 18 months ago, ocPortal has become like a whole new product with a substantially new following.

Rishi Saravanan is a ninja. He'll be knocking me off soon (which would make me perfectly happy).

Leader-board or not, you are still one the most-respected members in my eyes who has been incredibly generous with advice and ideas.

That was a remarkable shuffle indeed!

Really glad Bob, that your efforts to promote the best of ocPortal can finally be quantified in this way. It is an achievement to be proud of.  I am also positive of the fact that this new leader-board still shows the names of very active members; others like them are not too far behind to influence that shuffle with their relentless commitment to share their knowledge and work. Hopefully, more will follow your lead and develop their own strategy to support our beloved product and its team of developers.

Well Done!

Thanks, Jean.

I anxiously await the day that I no longer top the list. It will not be due to a loss of interest in or support of ocPortal but because others have made their own commitments which surpass mine.

To get a better sense of who is helping out with ocPortal, people should click the "community stars" link a bit lower in that block. They will see a much better view of who does what to help the ocPortal community. For instance, even though you and temp1024 are no longer in the top 5 leader-boeard, you are both well-represented on this list.

I personally think it is important to acknowledge those who give back to the community. I believe it sets a tone that new members will follow when they feel capable. It all come down to that "givers and takers' that Chris wrote about. It's fine to take when needed, but one should have an internal balance sheet that makes them want to equal or surpass that taking by giving back to the community in whatever way they can.
