For the last few weeks I've been tinkering with Android development building my first app, and it occurred to me that down the track I might want to make an ocPortal related app.

I was thinking about an app (free of course) that talks to the ocPortal chat rooms in a very low bandwidth manner via AJAX so that people can monitor multiple chat rooms from multiple sites at once while on the go from the one interface.

I honestly don't know if I will even start the project (and if I do it would quite some time away), but I just wanted to get a feel what people think. Would you find it useful at all, or do you think it really adds minimal or no real value?

What do you think?

If you think it might be useful could you please post what device you have and the Android version.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S II (GT-I9100) running Android v2.3.3.

I think, like Harry, I'll leave the perceived value to the young'uns, amongst us.

But can't help thinking that porting this across to the Android market can't be a bad thing, considering the enthusiasm for the modern technology.

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm not entirely convinced myself (not by a long shot actually) of the value.

I also think that it could potentially be good exposure for ocPortal, but I can't see it making any converts so it would not really be worth the effort on that count. For sites that use ocPortal, most of their members would not even be aware, or care, that ocPortal is under the hood.

IDK… perhaps instead of monitoring chatrooms, you could have an app that works with the ocPortal Instant Messaging? I have a feeling that might have more *value* but I could be wrong.

I am able to access site chat rooms quite fine on my Droid Inc mobile browser, so that may lead to my sekpticisim on the idea, however I do note that apps that lead to other browser sites (google +, facebook, etc) are very popular, so maybe it would be worth the try?

Like ocPortal? Want to thank Chris and gang somehow? Then help out in the chat room! It really needs your help! Just open it in a tab everytime you open your web browser, and when you hear a "ding", check it out!

Perhaps an app that makes easy display of Galleries might be usefull. Somebodies out and wants to sow their personal galleries to someone  a simple slide from pic to pic might be popular? Just thinking out loud here. I know you can brose the site via phone I just mean without any site fluff if you follow?

It probably would include IM as I don't really distinguish between them.

I think that that would be far too limited a use.

limited use? Maybe. Used more than the text thingy? Quite likely! All I know is I think people unifying their images would be of use to them. There are a million ways to text and chat but image integrations cooler I think. Don't forget the galleries can hold music and video too hmmmm. But again you're talking to someone who's not a big texter chater. I don't mind forum chatting but I hate chat rooms and texting. So for me I see more use with galleries. But thats me.

I don't particularly like chat rooms either, especially when the rooms themselves are very quiet.

And while there may be millions of ways to chat, I'm fairly sure that those methods don't talk to ocPortal. So its not a matter of 'yet another chat program', but more 'can we breathe new life into the ocPortal chat rooms'.

As for galleries that can probably be done fairly easily with just templates.

yeah I was thinking an app that sort of bypasses templates and just loads the pics. Kinda like browsing through pics on ones phone . Oh hey there ya go lets sync the phone pics to ocportal too! ooh 2 way communications oh wait now we are back on chat?…. lol

P.S. it's late here forgive my feeble humour!

I don't know temp1024, some sites may have a more extensive use of the IM versus chat room.. and since we are talking about simple but useful apps for the phone…

Also I disagree with your thoughts on the gallery idea. Actually, I think that would hold more value than a chat type program. Not only would the young phone user be able to quickly and easily show off some pics from the gallery, that person would also then likely be able to quickly upload pics from the phone. All without having to navigate the menus and such in the phone browser.

I dunno, I myself might not even use it a lot, but I sure would download it. There has been times when I took what I thought to be a nice pic and wanted to upload it to my site, but decided not to because I didn't want to fool around with the mobile version or fumble around with the usb cord (which always become useless within a month's time!). If I had the ocPortal Gallery app, I'd just fire up that bad boy, click on my gallery, and upload! Or even better, have it work so that I can upload straight from my phone photo gallery via the share feature.

Duck, I think this particular app has merit. So get to making it! lol….

I'd love to but unfortunately I'm still working on my first app. Lots to learn and experiment with (not to mention other thing on my plate).

Lets keep those idea flowing.

Fan in action

I think this is an important idea.

There is commercial value in being able to browse a gallery on your phone - and fantastic use value in members of your site being able to upload an image and sort blerb from their phones.

Um .. also ..think of the industry which has driven in fact built the internet since inception (yes the one beginning with s).

Yes, but do we really need another gallery app, and one for a very restrictive audience at that.

Hang on there Duck!!! Galleries are in the lead yes, but its still early days, and we've only come up with two ideas so far.

LOL I know just teasin ya!    But I do seriously believe it would be the most welcome of all features or apps you could think of I imagine.  But that's not to say a chatting app doesn't have plenty of merit too.

Just been my experience that people go through chatting in phases. Some people really like it at first even get thoroughly hooked to it but then at some point the novelty wears off or something and they become disinterested. I know it has happened to a lot of people (including myself) so this is why I have small dose of skeptism when comparing it against something like gallery functionality which I think never fades in terms of interest. Since paintings were possible people have always wanted to show off and display imagery. People never tire of viewing and seem to always enjoy it as a positive experience. Chatting on the other hand, when you think about it in those terms doesn't quite stack up. But again don't take that as discouragement if that is where your interests lie as it will undoubtably have a use and be enjoyed too.

I only argue to the point that if it's simply you want to build the first ocPortal android app that people will want most I think galleries is a top place to consider. However if you're heart tells you that you want to build a chat app then you should listen to it and build that cause it will bring you the most satisfaction to build.

I Know   .

I don't have any special attachment to a chat app at all, it just happened to be the first one I thought of. I also don't want to just rush into the first thing that is suggested.

My heart is more likely saying that its not worth the inevitable headaches that will come with it, but the little programmer in side it is saying that the best way to learn (and keep your focus/interest) is to select a project that you're likely to want to use on an on-going basis, not just a project for the sake of a project.

My first project, headset button controls for the FM Radio, is a perfect example. Its something that I will be using a lot, so the pain will be worth it.

Well with my first Android app now almost complete (just some cosmetics, dotting I's and crossing t's left), I've pretty much resolved that I won't be pressing ahead with an ocPortal related app unless its something I will personally end up using regularly.

Its a real shame though. It would have been nice, but I'm just not going to be able to find the time to do it properly.

Thanks temp. I've pinned the tab for now and shall attempt to install it on my Galaxy S-something. Should prove interesting feedback for you from this part of the world (Portugal).

Not a great fan of mobile devices; simply require that my phone receives and makes calls.

How un-geeky is that?!?
