Although few websites could routinely hit this metric, this article discusses visitors' expectations for site speed and the advantage of having a fast-loading site: Users Expect Websites to Load in the Blink of an Eye | Webmonkey | Wired.com

Although much of this is common sense, the article does drive home the importance of this issue. It is important that you have solid hosting and that your software be optimized is you really want to capture your engage your visitors.

I completely agree with this. I hate waiting for websites to load.

Websites like Facebook, Google, Wikipedia and the BBC are such a pleasure to browse because when you click a link you get what you want immediately. In fact, since I've had my 100Mbps connection, pages have loaded so quickly that I didn't even notice. That's awesome.
