I recently  trashed my WinXP Pro and had to do a lot of head-scratching to bring it back from the dead  - yes Amy, I managed, but thanks for the offer.

The reason I mention it is that when I eventually restored everything via the Repair Console, breathed a sigh of relief, and started catching up with missed posts in the ocPortal Forum, I noticed that the staff had gone and changed all their icons without telling anybody. I wasn't upset - they looked rather eye-catching. Then I noticed that some of my graphics on my own site seemed to have taken on a life of their own. Whoa! I hadn't changed anything, so what was going on?

Long story, short. The Alpha-blending was shot to hell. Not everything was displaying as it was meant to. I hazarded a guess that I'd also blown my graphics card - the new one I'd just bought. What a bummer!

Long story, shorter. Went out and ordered another computer. And then tonight, still irritated that things weren't getting any better, and after finding that, yet again, Chris had to post a patch because IE wasn't playing good, I did a bit more intensive investigation. First I fired up FF only to find that there was absolutely nothing wrong with my graphics card. Everything was displaying as it should.

The result of my investigation is a simple one. If you install IE7 on your XP machine, just remember to remove IE7 from that beast if you have to recover from a breakdown. Apparently the restoration of the OS to its near-original form also brings back IE6. IE7 and IE6 don't play together at all. There is a huge conflict and the display breaks.

I've now removed IE7 and restored IE6. I am posting this using IE6 and everything is displaying perfectly. Looks like the staff have even restored the old icons!?!

I am considering cancelling the new computer, but what the hell, I've managed to talk the wife into letting me buy it, and there isn't going to be as good a chance again in the near future.

That's the salutory lesson for today, folks!

 :$

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

Yes Ie 7 displays things like firefox but it tries to use the ie code so things are not displayed correctly.
I noticed this on my site so use images that work on both systems.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.
