While I'm not really hiding from anyone, I don't like having my name and address available for identity thieves.

I'm the same way. You mentioned using a Visa gift card, which may well work, but here's how most people (including me) do it.

When you go through the process of registering your domain for the first time, you're given the option to use a third party service (which costs about $10 a year) which will "take your place", so to speak. They'll put their information in the database for you. I know that there's technical terms for these sorts of companies but I can't think of them right now. Perhaps someone else can name them.

I have been trying to do that but I have not credit card to be able to pay them.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

I've been researching this.

Some companies offer private registration, and the people who use a gift card with a false name and address are in violation of some sort of international agreement to where the host can revoke your domain name if you are caught.

Others use a PO box and a company name to register.

I asked downtownhost if they offer a private service and they say they do.

I just have their hosting so I might look into getting their private thing.
