Hi :),

Unfortunately ocPortal can't support Unicode because PHP supports it very badly.

I don't have much experience with non-Latin languages, but you may be able to make a translation by setting the charset to 'VISCII'.

  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

I don't think so, PHP supports it not too bad as you are, please kept eyes to VBB, PHP Nuke, SMF (SimpleMachineForum board),… its support Unicode very nice

So just can say for now: OCportal not support for Unicode  :offtopic:

This is from the Wikipedia PHP page:
PHP does not have native support for Unicode or multibyte strings, making internationalization of PHP software difficult. However, native Unicode support will be added to the language for PHP 6.

And unfortunately that's true. We could support unicode, but it would be extremely time consuming for us, and our support would need to be rewritten as soon as PHP6 comes. Therefore when PHP6 does come, we will make sure that we do support Unicode :).

Hi,

This is quite an old post. Since then we have added UTF support to ocPortal. It isn't perfect because of PHP's lack of UTF support, but it basically "works". Theoretically it shouldn't work, but the known problems are so unlikely to occur, that it effectively does.

was this post made before ocportal 3 came out?

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

I don't think so. But ocPortal 3 didn't support unicode – we added it in in a patch release at some point.

O ok. I was just wondering to kind of figure out how old this was.
I only used the 2.* version for a short while before 3.* out.

This does make me wonder if true SMF and IPB compatibility will come soon.
I mean the username and display names.
Both those systems have display names for security reasons. It basically adds another layer of security as some one can not figure out what your using name is and from there figure out what the password is.

Some of my members have complained about their username showing on parts of the site.
I have removed the username from as many places as I could as I could not figure out how to change it.
