This is just a curiosity question.

Google is supposed to crawl the net and add new sites automatically, picking up the keywords you have applied to your site. So to get myself into google, I just have to be patient? (Any idea how long it takes?). I have tried submitting sites to google, doing site-maps etc, but to no avail. Has anyone had their OCP site picked up automatically??

It took my site a year for people to find it using google.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

Google indexes sites quicker if there are lots of people linking. New sites that nobody links to tend to take a long time to come up.

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

I've been complimentary in the past about OCP's feature, where it automatically extracts keywords from your 'News' posts (one of many areas it extracts keywords), which in turn sits well with Google because the keywords are relevant to the specific page trawled.

And Chris' comment about links is, of course, very pertinent. One of the reasons why I try to convince as many of the webmasters that have similar sites to mine to link. In my case it is a 'lost cause' as many of them see other sites as 'competition', and I really don't have the time or inclination to go through a long, protracted SEO dialogue.

But as Amy said, time will eventually overcome most of your difficulties as far as page ranking is concerned. Unless you're prepared to pay a 'professional' company to submit your site for you. Not my choice, though.

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

Yeah, I tried submitting the old site to google through being a member and through my server host (1&1). Thanks amichan - I tested by googling your site. Only another 11 months to wait!!

It might not take that long it just took that long for members to start joining my site after finding it though google.
a lot of members before the joined by word of mouth and links from other sites.

it took my site about 2 months so there is no set time for google to list your site.

I'm not real big on building skins as of right now but if you would like some custom graphics done for your site I am more than willing as long as I have the time. -\-PhrozenStudios-/-
