In recent weeks we have been getting a large number of posts in our forums from fake passport offers.

These are coming from different IP addresses and different accounts being set up.

Has any one had experience in dealing with these spammers. We are blocking wide ranges of IP addresses, as well many words are being added to the "Banned Words" dictionary but we don't see any easy way to stop these.

We have considered adding additional requirements to login where you need to answer a challenge question i.e 3 + ? = 7 and fill in 4 before it will allow a login.

Example of text:

Is the problem with your Family Law WEB Guide site? If so, it doesn't appear to have a login requirement at all. Are the spammers members?

Do you have a Samsung Galaxy S / Galaxy S II ? If so, why not check out my ScreenFree FM Radio .

The Family Law Web Guide site has a login requirement and member groups. Initially these spammers were coming into "Guest" posts and we easily deleted and or did not validate.

You get to our members sign up and new account through the "Members" link bottom of the right hand menu list on the home page or in the forums.

When you get to Forums it also asks you to login. It is a really old version 3.xx and we are flat out developing an exciting new site with some exciting and innovative input from OCP developers.

The Spammers are now signing up as members, so we think there is little we can do. If we ban IP address ranges that would be a waste of time as they are probably using one of the many VPN services to get local IP addresses. We have added a range of words to the banned word database which should be stopping the validation of the post.

I suspect what we are seeing is some third world marketing company. Our next option is to have our Federal Police track the IP addressing and deal with the VPN services.

Perhaps one thing we could do is in any new member sign up process we could add an additional step that the new member has to not only click on the response validation email BUT that we require a phone number and we call them and the moderators can then make the final approval of the member account. I think it is going to be problematic unless there is some manual intervention to approve a new member.

Fan in action

My thought is that bad language filtering could be extended (or used as the basis to create scam recognition filtering)to filter on lists of words.

As an example the use solely of the word fake, should not raise alarm (in the context of the Family Law Web guide fake or false allegations are discussed, Issues surrounding obtaining children's passports by 1 parent are no unheard of and so on).

However, if the words fake, passport, license, ID and identity all appeared then such a post could be considered as potentially bad.

As such a list say like:
4,fake,passport,ID,identity,documents

could be used (4 is the threshold so any 4 of these words would trigger the action(s) of the filter).

This could be more complex, like assigning a value to specific words (so allowing  some words to be more of a concern), perhaps also having an indicator(eg ~fake(2) will result in the trigger being incremented by 2 for every instance of the word fake),… that all instances of the indicated word increment the count.

Lists could easily be shared/distributed.

Regards, Mike.

I'm not a member, and the add topic button and subsequent topic submission form is presented to me on 19 out of the 51 forums. Of those 19 only 4 are the getting started forums where guest can post, so thought that might be how they were getting through.

Although I didn't actually try and submit a topic, these are the non-getting started forums that gave me a submit topic form:

* New Site Visitors and Site News
* Miscellaneous/General
* RESEARCH - Discussion and analysis
* Active Lobbying
* Conferences and major events
* Let off Steam and Venting area for Australian FAMILY LAW issues, Visitation, Courts etc.
* Let off Steam and Venting area for Australian CHILD SUPPORT issues.
* Humourous Posts
* SPCA (Shared Parenting Council of Australia)
* SRL-Resources
* Dads in Distress - DIDS
* M4E - Mothers for Equality
* United Kingdom
* Canada
* Countries without a specific forum

Agreed that it would largely be a waste of time.

Funnily enough, this morning I was analysing failed logins on my site and found 4 banned users trying to log in from over 230 different IP addresses. I'm guessing that they are from compromised PC rather than VPN services.

Good luck with that.

That would be an extreme measure. The bigger problem though is that being a legal advise/resource site many, dare I say most, of your legitimate members would probably have privacy/safety concerns about providing contact numbers.

Thanks very much all for your thoughtful analysis. I will look into the forums advised but any posts by non members should be unvalidated and therefore not seen. I will do a bit more of a look at it.

I like MikeT 's idea to expand the word filter.

The issue is resolved using version 9.xx.

Not only can you have new users in a "Probation" group and that group can be set to have their first few posts validated but you can also force their first post into an "Introduction" forum. AS WELL you can automate the new users to move from "probation" to say "general" after only a  couple of posts by using points to auto upgrade their membership.

Show me any other forum that can do that stuff !!! Pays to spend time in those Admin setup screens.  :thumbs:  :thumbs:   :wub:
