There has been a lot of discussion in these forums about 'problems' when logging in with a Facebook account. Since I don't have the add-on activated I am unable to make any serious comment, but I came across the following when searching for something totally different.

The information here isn't strictly connected with the Facebook log-on 'problem', but since it appears to be loosely connected with a Facebook 'problem' when interacting with another software, I wondered if a 'setting' might be responsible for the FB/ocP woes.

Thought I'd pass it on - just in case!

Why can't I create a Facebook button in Jing?

Windows XP / Vista / 7:

Some Jing users encounter a The page you requested was not found error when attempting to authorize their Facebook button in the Windows version of Jing.

This is likely due to security settings on your Facebook account.

To authorize access to your Facebook account for Jing, please follow these steps:

1. Open a web browser and Sign In to your Facebook account.

2. Click on the Account button and choose Account Settings.

3. Click on the Account Security section.

4. Uncheck the option Browse Facebook on a secure connection (https) whenever possible:

5. Now click Save.

6. Try creating a Share to Facebook button in Jing:

Thanks for bringing this up, Fletch. Unfortunately, I had made sure that I was not using a secure connection back when I was experimenting. There is a conflict of some sort going on (it seems to be Facebook saying "Hey, you can't log in twice!").

I've learned to accept the limitation. The one thing I am really missing is the ability for Facebook login to ocPortal. I trust that the developers will get this sorted whenever they get around to a full Facebook integration. In the meantime, I've been using RSS Graffiti to make sure my posts are delivered to my Facebook account and that is working out really well.

It really was a stab in the dark, Bob. I haven't succumbed to the 'social media' pressures - yet! But I suspect I will sooner rather than later. Hence I try to keep up with the posts that deal with the 'problem'. Who knows, by the time I take the leap of faith, all these problems will be behind us!

cheers

One can hope.

I really have not used "social media" on a personal level - email and phone calls are fine by me. But I have found them to be useful in marketing. For instance, I have a follower on Twitter who writes an art blog and he has 36k+ followers. Since I have been getting a lot of traffic from Europe, I suspect it is the result of this (and another) European art blogger.

This video sums up how I feel about Facebook however I recognize the fact that it is hard to ignore such a powerful marketing tool. Still it constantly nags at me to think because something can be used to increase marketing potential should I ignore the fact that it is contributing to the drain of societies self respect, intelligence and privacy? hmm it is a dilema.

Anyway I like this video so I thought I'd share.

you need to get off facebook - YouTube

I can say that I feel much the same. I have no personal account on Facebook or Twitter and it bothers me that  my sister and niece spend so much time on Facebook. And the strange thing is that they are very smart people otherwise. I don't understand how they got sucked in.

But I simply won't pass up the marketing potential especially when it is largely automated.

I have a friend who recently can not even log in to facebook anymore on one of her computers. She has a desktop and 2 laptops around the house. She can log in via the two laptops but not the desktop.

She can get to the login page but once she enters her email and password, she gets the good old "Cannot connect to the facebook server" message. She too is just considering deleting the facebook bookmark and not even bothering with it anymore or for awhile. She said waiting 4 days with nothing is rediculous. I agree.

I wonder if the Facebook issues are related to this:
Facebook Developer Roadmap

You'll notice that they are changing to oAuth 2.0 and they are deprecating a number API methods.

I'm not sure how up-to-date the Facebook add-on is relative to these changes.

A while ago I tried inserting a bunch of custom comcode, which didn't work, but Chris quickly added it and you can actually call up a YouTube video in a post. Use the following …

Code

[youtube]8UouP8cRYZ8[/youtube]
… where 8UouP8cRYZ8 is the YouTube code for the vid.

Give it a try. You will see it happen in the preview pane. You don't need to post it … !!

Thanks for the chance to prove that a YouTube vid can be played in this forum, Eric.

And I thought it was an extremely well written response, too!

There's one from a girl (kinda cute too) that's a good response as well. But really I agree more with guy #1 to top it off I further dislike FB because after beeing nagged into getting an acount a few years back I only occaisionally log into it every couple months or so and it seems as if every time I do they've changed the layout and format and what I could barely find before I know have to go on another hunting expiditon to find again. That is absurdly frustrating! But I don't understand whats wrong with email or a chat program for communicating I really don't see the big draw or need for FB.

I actually would much rather see google WAVE take off. Noow that's some cool technology!
