A portal, loosely shares its meaning with the word portal in general.  It is the entryway to an area.  In the case of a website portal, it is the gateway to all the information and content contained within its site.

The term "portal", however, is overused, and a more accurate term for ocPortal is "CMS" (Content Management System).
ocPortal (and other CMS solutions…) allow you to easily build a site with little to no knowledge of HTML, PHP or other scripting language.

Bulletin boards allow visitors to a site to post messages, hold discussions, share information etc.  Another term for Bulletin Board is "Forum(s)".

It is possible to have more than one CMS, and have them integrated with a Bulletin Board, but it can get complex, and cause more trouble than it is worth.

You can make more Sub-forum within your main forum. So that way you only have to install 1 forum.
Its like how this forum is set up, with multiple sub-forums. e.g. OC Portal; Unofficial Forums.

These are the forums supported by OCP:

We are proud of the fact that our portal system supports integration with any of the following major forum/bulletin board systems:

    * Invision Board 1.1/1.2/1.3/2.0 (recommended)
    * phpBB 2.0.x (recommended)
    * vBulletin 2.2.x/3.0.x
    * Burning Board 2.0.x/2.2.x
    * UBB.Threads 6
    * XMB 1.8
    * OpenBB 1.0.x
    * tForum 94.2.1
    * Simple Machine Forum 1.0.x

The best way is to search google for all these forums, and look for yourself.  Your questions are vague, that it would take a long time for someone to answer them. The forums listed are different products that ocPortal can integrate with, and they provide the same kinds of features as each other; which to use is a matter of personal preference.

Incidentally - although I agree that IPB should definitely be recommended, and phpBB is a decent 'freebie' - surely it would make sense for you to recommend vB on your site since you're using it here?

It's really hard to recommend any particular forum system - as we've noticed they all have strengths and weaknesses. Deciding which one you should use really depends on what you're trying to acheive.
