Heh, I figured ocPortal would've had a PM system…why doesn't it? Sorry, hehe I'm just used to using software with PMing Systems like IPB and vB. :D Please don't take this post as a request, I was just wondering as to why it didn't have a PM system, most do in fact.

It has a private topic system, which most feel is better :).

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

It's a nice enough system (though am stiall awaiting a reply to the PT sent to you, did you get it?) but confusing a bit, as peeps think they're still in the forum, and/or only discover it because they think "personal topics" means topics/threads they have posted on - but doesn't.

In fact every time I come here I get tempted to click that to find the threads I'm on, even though I know it doesn't work that way.

Likewise clicking a member's name should allow someone to see what threads they've posted on but it doesn't seem to do that?

And I have to admit the "search" function is very poor. For a start it needs a "search this forum" function, not the entire site's contents. If that is available and I've missed it, please explain how.

Can't really figure out how you could have missed it.
Just opens when you click the search button.

Yep I received the personal topic. It's a bit long for me to reply between tasks so I've scheduled my reply to you for tomorrow afternoon.

Thanks Chris.

Mo, OK, I'm here looking at the forum. I look down I see buttons about marking read, tracking, reply, add topic. Below that quick reply and more options, 'build a website', copyright notice etc. No search.

Looking up..

Exact same buttons, above them.. website, forums, personal zone, content management, documentation.

We also have forums, rules, members, groups, unread and recommend.

Forum root, general, view topic..

There is no 'search' anywhere.

Let's try the forum 'root'..

It's the same, no search button or box.

My conclusion then is that this forum has no search function. Ah, but didn't I spot a search box on the front page? So I LEAVE THE FORUM to go look..

awesome, there isn't one, I was thinking of my own site. So where did I see search, mmm, in the docs thingy.. Right, that tells me, IF I click "more", that I can search the following:

Downloads
Comcode pages
Search personal topics
Catalogue entries
Posts
News
Image of the day
Catalogue categories
Download categories
Members
Quizzes
Site directory

So I'm guessing that would be "posts"?

Yeah, blindingly obvious.

Well having switched everything else off, I do a search for 'quiz'.. Well it's nice to know the search works, found my own 3 posts. Sadly, nothing else about getting quizzes to work properly. :(

OK, next question, how do I create a "Search this forum" button? A text link would do?

I like the personal topics and consider them to be PM.
I would love other systems like IPB to have it, some others do too and there is a mod for IPB out.
I find it makes it easier to see who said what instead of all those quotes, or not knowing what you said cuz they did not quote you and you forgot to click on the save in sent.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.
