if your site uses a index.php file for its home page but you also have an index.html file in the root directory would it's meta info be picked up also?

Basically, on any given page that Googlebot has reached, if it finds a link to any other URL that it can crawl, that URL would also be crawled recursively.
So if you have a link to your index.html somewhere, it will be crawled.

If applicable, it would be good to get other sites to link to index.html instead of index.php. ;)

thanks chris that's valueable info to know.

chris i hate to do this to you but i'm still getting error messages for various commands like trying to update my meta info.

the name of the site is right but it says "a site about oc portal?"

the info shows its been updated and for that command i don't get an error mess, it says the function been completed but it never reflects.

other stuff like trying to edit the seedy info page i still get the same kind of error messages as before.

oh i also opened the board to members, it was logging me in so i thought iwas open, come to find out they were getting the board is closed message.

i've tried following the error and changing file permissions but it doesn't help.

Hi,
Sorry for the delay, we've been busy with documentation this week.

chris i hate to do this to you but i'm still getting error messages for various commands like trying to update my meta info.

other stuff like trying to edit the seedy info page i still get the same kind of error messages as before.

I'll take a look soon.

the name of the site is right but it says "a site about oc portal?"

To change this, edit the root and membersonly zones. The text is defined on a per-zone basis.

oh i also opened the board to members, it was logging me in so i thought iwas open, come to find out they were getting the board is closed message.

I'm a bit confused about this one (perhaps you mean portal, rather than board). But I'll look soon and see what you mean.

seedy/pages/comcode/EN needed world write permissions. I couldn't see any other problems, but other problems that are occuring with Comcode pages will be equivalent problems in other zones.

hi chris,
no worries bro, i'm get busy as well and i do know the help i've recieved has been for free, thanks.

it all seems to be straighten out and working now.

i've created my first oc portal theme, you can check it out here http://wife.wowbbthemes.com/index.php

please click through it and let me know if i've missed anything.
i left the bottons on the reply page blue on purpose, so that color blind people could easily see function they might not expect to be there.
otherwise i think the contrasting of shades still make this theme easily viewable by color blind people.

so now that i have skinned it, my questions are,

how do i name the theme, can i just rename the folder or are there any files into which the name has to be placed?

also what are the essential files that need to be in the new theme folder so i can create a zip file?

basically can you tell me what i need to do to release this theme.

a thorough critique is welcomed.
its my first one and i had a heck of a time figuring out what controled what, i never worked with 3 interdepentant stylesheets before.

oh BTW……you might want to consider using gif images in later releases, because IE doesen't support transparancy for .png it serverly limits the style of graphics one can use in creating a new theme or even just minor image changes.

i know they can be edited, but most novices find it much easier to just overwrite the exisiting file.

It looks really nice. Good job! :)

To formally rename your theme, go to your themes page. There should be a "rename theme" link for your theme (unless you did all of your editing in the default theme, which can't be renamed)

also what are the essential files that need to be in the new theme folder so i can create a zip file?

basically can you tell me what i need to do to release this theme.

Go to your administration center. On the left-hand menu, towards the top, there is a "Modifications" link. Click that, then "Export mod". Then you can follow the steps to export your theme as a .tar file.

There are a number of reasons that we chose not to use gif images. Firstly, as it has extremely limited transparency support, it puts a major strain on the types of designs you can do.

PNG's support full transparency, and are fully supported by all browsers except Internet Explorer at this time. Seeing as the next version (IE7) has PNG transparency supported, we felt we shouldn't severly limit ourselves by dropping to the lowest common demoninator which will be replaced soon, anyway. We also wrote code to have PNG's shown with their alpha channels in IE6.

"it serverly limits the style of graphics one can use in creating a new theme or even just minor image changes."

I'm not sure what you mean by this, exactly - using PNG's allows us (and you) more creativity than with gifs.

thanks allen  its my first, i expect to get better as i go.

what i meant by

Code

"it serverly limits the style of graphics one can use in creating a new theme or even just minor image changes."

is the exact case you made for png.

png is a superior format and once IE supports it fully there won't be much to talk about. but that isn't the case yet, and even mozzilla doesn't always desplay transparency correctly, the first set of green buttons i made had some trans in them, when i uploaded them, they didn't display that way, a light background was slapped behind them.

i had to soften the edges to obscure it.

plus pngs are larger than gifs, i'm not sure if the gain is worth the price when it comes to forum graphics, which are only going to be so elaborate.

i'm not trying to give any lessons or anything, png is the future, my point is the future is not now.
either way its not a big issue for me.

on another note, i just registered the software   chris please look for an email from me………i can use your help bro

If that's the case, the software you're using to create the PNGs is not working or configured correctly, or you're using a very old version of Mozilla.

PNGs are only slightly bigger than GIFs when compressed correctly. (Lossless compression.)

I would choose PNGs over GIFs any day.
