It doesn't look like they do, but it never hurts to ask.

If not, what hosting services does everyone recommend?

GoDaddy OK for domain registration?

I use godaddy for my domains and downtownhost.com for my hosting.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

(Just for the record – we don't offer hosting and domains at this time – thanks for the enquiry though)

Become a fan of ocPortal on Facebook or add me as a friend. Add me on on Twitter.
Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

I've used GoDaddy before and yes, they work and officially support everything they say they do. My main frustration is that even after you're a paying customer you are inundated with advertising left and right. For example, going to renew a domain gives you pages and pages of "Are you sure you don't want to add XXX for only $$$ more? It's a BIG DISCOUNT!!". They use big, bold, flashing advertising like that on every page, which I consider to be basically immature on their part, particularly since I've paid them already.

I used to use a registar named "RegisterFly", and I still use them for one of my domains because I'm too cheap to pay the silly transfer fee. I'm not sure how their prices compare (it's been a while since I've bought something through either of them) but I know that RegisterFly feels a lot more professional. It gives you a lot of statistics and figures on your main page, and domains which are expiring soon are neatly bolded in the "Expiring domains" column instead of plastered on the top of your home screen with bright neon lettering.

You get the idea. Pick who you like - if the interface doesn't matter to you then go with whoever's cheaper. I don't have experience with either's technical support so I can't comment.

GoDaddy can bite me if they are going to spam me to death.

I'd like to have to deal with as few different companies as possible.  A few offer both hosting and domain registration, but thay all look very busy as if they just can't wait until you give them your personal information.

I'd actually like to keep my whois info unknown, so I wonder if paying under a fictional name with a visa gift card for a whole year would work?

Registerfly looks OK.

Why are .info sites so cheap?  I actualy like that extension.

I had godaddy hosting for a while and it was awful, very slow but I do not mind there domain register but yes they do spam you.
The host  I recommend is downtownhost.com and if you want cheap domains names with out the spam go to name cheap.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

Determining if a host complies with all of the below isn't always apparent form their websites.

I am assuming that both registerfly and downtownhost are comliant since they are being used by people here.

ocPortal requires:

A web server running Windows or Linux. As Windows hosting is usually more expensive, and provides no benefit to ocPortal, yet inferior compatibility with PHP, a Linux server is preferable.

ocPortal recommends:

A PHP environment with the pSpell, TTF, ZIP and XML extensions.

A PHP environment with Safe Mode disabled, but open_basedir enabled.

A PHP environment with a memory limit of 16MB.

downtownhost is a linux based server and has what you listed.
Web Hosting Services - Multi Domain Hosting with Cpanel Rvskins and Fantastico de Luxe, Personal Web Hosting Services, Ecommerce Web Hosting Web Hosting provider - Downtown Host ← more info there and you can talk to them on their live support and they are very helpful.

Well I've never used RegistryFly's hosting service before. They service they provide is that they purchased my domain name for me and added it to the master domain list databases. They don't do any of my hosting.

I do all of my hosting completley independently. I just log in to RegistryFly to *point* it to my other server. I logged in recently to refresh my memory as to what it looked like, but prior to that it had been well over a year since I'd logged in. Once you set up your domain, you basically have no need to login again until the domain expires and you want to renew.

On the other hand, if you're getting a 'bundle' deal that most domain registrars offer (which means they also provide you with hosting), then yes, it's all one company and you'll login to it all the time to manage email accounts, upload new files, etc. I've not done that so I can't comment on it. My guess is that they will support ocPortal (the limitations for ocP aren't so huge that most hosts would have any trouble with it) so it would probably work just fine.

@BigTime: My host recently increased our specs to an amount I cannot even use, not to mention I operate five domains on the server and a few others are being hosted on subdomains. Anyhow, I could host you at no charge if you'd like. Contact me via MSN Messenger if you're interested. :)

That's very generous of you, Joe.  I am still trying to find a partner to help me with this project and I've hit a potential snag.

I was hoping to use the CEDI and catalog features of OCP to help people understand the law and to explain legal pleadings to defend themselves against debt collectors.  It's a big problem in the US where they try to collect more than they are legally entitled to, and go to extreme means to bully people into paying.

In the US, there is a concern about the Unauthorized Practice of Law.  Even if you offer legal help for free, there are dark forces who stand against us. (Debt collectors who don't want us to know how to defend ourselves in court)

It's remotely possible for an average citizen to be charged with UPL, even though I haven't seen it happen yet to anyone offering help for free.

I'm going to run all this by a few lawyers elsewhere and see what they say.

About domains, I've gotten all five of mine with Yahoo - one in which was purchased back when they were selling their domains for $1.99/year for new customers. I do believe their domains are about $10/year today.

A lot of registrars have them that high.
