Greetings,

I hereby declare today - December 4th, as Chris Graham Appreciation Day.

No where else will you find a developer that is as helpful, friendly, and cares as much about his community as he does his product as Chris Graham does.

As lead developer of ocPortal, soon to become composrcms, and the main guy of ocproducts, Chris is a very busy person. But that has not stopped him from hanging out in IRC and the forums, providing support and helping others.

Just this past week, despite feeling sick and ran down, Chris has went above and beyond his role in helping me improve the Wiki+ function of ocPortal/composrCMS. Somethings I made work arounds for he came in and made a much better official method for. Things that he didn't have to do mind you, but he did. He truly is a class act.

Therefore I propose that yearly on this day we honour Chris Graham as not only being a heck of a developer but also being one awesome human.

Legends of Nor'Ova: A site powered by ocPortal; home of the Legends of Nor'Ova tabletop RPG wiki and community.

Like ocPortal? Want to thank Chris and gang somehow? Then help out in the chat room! It really needs your help! Just open it in a tab everytime you open your web browser, and when you hear a "ding", check it out!

"Those who want help should first be willing to give help."

Thanks :).

As grand as development plans can be, user feedback is the most important thing, and mythus has provided some good feedback over the last week.

The IRC room is turning out to be very useful, but perhaps reducing forum traffic a bit, so here's a recap…

  1. For v10 we have added "responsive standard boxes" and the ability to easily set a CSS class for boxes. This means on mobile screens left/right floated boxes can be set to display as non-floated, via some standard responsive CSS we're using for these box types.
  2. Performance issues on Wiki+. mythus, note the second point, which I just resolved now – and performance is now up massively. 0002105: Slow-down for large Wiki+ pages - ocPortal feature tracker
  3. Some JS error relating to password_strength when editing accounts. I've just done a small patch for that, but I think actually that was either a browser quirk or connection issue, so I'll not do a hotfix unless other's get it.
  4. Wiki+ page adding doesn't result in getting points, as we defined Wiki+ points for posts only. That's an omission, from when it was primarily-post-based text rather than having a page-based option. For v10 we will grant points to both added pages and posts if the text length exceeds 1kb. I think that's far more logical.

(And yeah, I've had back to back colds the last few weeks  – still making decent v10 progress though).

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

I appreciate what Chris (and the rest of the team) do every day, but it's nice to have a memorable one. Now make the Wikipedia page and contact Calendar companies so they can add it. Hopefully this is just a western day and not a worldwide one, otherwise that's a lot of letters you need to send out :)

On a more serious note, good post mythus. 10/10. Would read again.

You'd better be making some decent progress if you want any appreciation from me!

Just kidding hope you feel better soon.
