EDIT: Does the FB button only show if the FB add-on is installed and active? It shows in my current site even though I long ago uninstalled the FB add-on. Could be just detritus, I suppose, although it does work (maybe because I am always logged into FB).

These sharing buttons are independent of any login connection to Facebook/etc, so are coded independently.

So you can either:
  1. hook up both your admin account
  2. or, you can just choose to announce new content via a news post and have it that post being syndicated
  3. or, you can hook up your site RSS to Facebook

It would seem a bit nicer if you could control to syndicate anything, but we decided it would not really work so well, bloat up the code/UI, and take up a lot of development time. If a site has user submitted content, then you'd have a situation where you'd either need to grant the users permission to potentially spam the Facebook page, or you'd have that user generated content not coming through. ocPortal supports OpenGraph, so you can just paste a link manually onto Facebook and it will show nicely anyway - that's pretty easy to work into your process.

I am really quite excited about the possibilities for Activities for use the account I post material from. I think this will allow me to have a very efficient workflow (not that the present workflow is particularly onerous).

Sounds like you thought through all the implications of how to handle syndication and made the best choice based on the trade-offs involved.

I asked because I thought the FB button was missing in v8. However, rechecking, I see that the button now appears as picture from the FB profile. Is it possible to add the FB "f" logo to the link for more clarity?

Ah actually I was wrong, the FB addon does overwrite the main_screen_actions block, and uses a Like button instead of a share button. I've no idea why Facebook is showing it like that though, it's new to me.

Facebook syndication

How do you control what gets syndicated to Facebook?

I expected to see a syndication setting for individual galleries, catalogs and forums but couldn't find anything.

Bob

As with v7 it is only news and calendar events, although there are now checkboxes for these when you add them so that's a bit better.

Chris-

Were these checkboxes just added recently? I don't have the checkboxes in either news/blogs or calendars. Or is there a configuration setting that must be set?

Thanks for your help.

Downloaded the latest github version yesterday (not sure if this means anything or not but it's chrisgraham-ocPortal-a50fcc4.zip). Everything seems to works far except I get blank pages when going to the admin start page and to the forums.

Just a transitional issue as you are making changes?

Setup menu in Admin Zone has options to set up oauth for FB and Twitter. Should then appear if that's worked.

When checking the settings throigh Configuration->Feature options: Facebook syndication/login, the settings are properly set.

In v8, I am unable to use ocPortal after switching on "Short URLs" - I get 404s which is to be expected. But when I try to get to the adminzone so that I can clear the caches, I also get 404s making it impossible for me to clear the cache and start using ShortURLs.

Think you might be talking about forum topics here. It would IIRC say something like "posted in <topic title>".

Just above. Consider these activities promotional signposts.

In v8, gallery entries now include titles and, when the "Short URLs" option is enabled, you get URLs like /pg/galleries/image/this-is-the-description/index.php when the Flow Mode interface is not enabled

In v7.1.5, the non-flow mode short URLs look like /galleries/image/-function_15.htm.

If I add a title to an existing gallery entry in v8, will a 301 redirect be automatically created from the old -function_X.htm to the new short URL format in v8?

Secondly, is it possible for you to create a shorter URL (e.g., lose the /pg) in v8, preferably ending in TITLE.htm?

Thanks for any input.

URL monikers refresh upon doing an edit.

/pg/ is the SEO URLs, you could use the new-style ones which don't have that and instead in .htm.
