Information regarding version ocPortal version 10

I read something about the functions that version 10 of ocPortal might include. Are there any specific version 10 proposals or plans with regard to features or functions?

Hi Malatesa,

I'm hoping we can post a proper announcement in the next week regarding our plans. It's been far too long without any formal announcement from us, there are some key things we haven't put out there yet.

Become a fan of ocPortal on Facebook or add me as a friend. Add me on on Twitter.
Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

bs3

No idea what bs3 is, but maybe you actually meant CSS3 :).

CSS3 and media queries work fine in any version of ocPortal, as we can just handle any HTML and CSS within our system if you put it in at the right place.

on what kind framework it will be?

If you're talking about CSS frameworks, it won't be any third-party framework in the default theme, it will be similar to how it is now (highly optimised hand-written CSS). You can use whatever CSS frameworks you want though, for the same reason as above. Generally a CSS framework will help you set up a grid, which generally is something one applies to carefully designed custom pages and is there to make it easier for a designer to implement that kind of thing.

will be option for css in one file or smallest number of css?

You can already do this. If you cut the CSS out of all the files and put it in one, ocPortal is smart enough to skip reference of the remaining empty files.

However, v10 has automatic merging of CSS files. All the CSS files used on a zone front page get merged into one in the cache and used as a baseline for any other pages on that zone.

I haven't got anything to announce in that area. We have implemented a Bootstrap theme for a client (using LESS), but it is not public. It is possible we could release a base bootstrap theme in the future, but there is no roadmap for that.

There are some trade-offs involved with Bootstrap. Bootstrap is pretty heavy, and editing it is more complex than simple plain CSS – but it is a very nice framework. So it's unlikely to ever be in ocPortal as default, we can't make things over-heavy/over-complex.

But anyone serious about design could do their own Bootstrap theme. There's nothing stopping them, as I say we support any CSS/HTML people choose to use in the CSS files/templates.
