I'm not sure I'm in the right forum, but I'd like to add a feature request to the avatar to allow the use of gravatars (gravatar.com) as an option.  Basically I'd imagine it to be a checkbox to "Use gravatar image", which would require no further input but send a hash of the user's email address to the Gravatar website to obtain an 80x80 avatar image.

You don't need a special option for this. If a member wants their gravatar.com avitar then they can just specify the url when selecting an avatar.

While that works (to some degree), it's not convenient, especially if I want to force the use of Gravatar images.  To get a Gravatar image in ocPortal, using the URL method, the user has to log into the Gravatar website, click on the email address they want to use, click "Check this Avatar" to get the hash code for their email, then copy/paste the url into ocPortal (remembering to manually add the .jpg extension for ocPortal to actually read the file).

And, that assumes users have permission to use external images as avatars.  Gravatar.com has the PHP code necessary to generate the hash and retrieve the image, so implementing into ocPortal shouldn't be that difficult (the software would simply generate the external url based on the user's registered email address when the user chose to use the Gravatar image).

But at some point they still have to log in to Gravatar to select their image, so basic interaction with Gravatar is unavoidable.

The fact that it would really only serve a niche user base is probably the biggest reason that will dissuade to developers from including it.

Also, previously you mentioned that use of Gravatar would be optional (i.e. use of check box), now you suggest it might be mandatory. That is another negative.

Having said all that, I have seen the code and it is definitely trivial, so anyone can do it and need not bother the developers with it.

coding the gravatar option would be a breeeze I would spend 4 times longer trying to figure out how and where I put the code to integrate into ocp at this point lol. However if and when I get some time I will definitely take a look into making that for you. I am far too busy for the next couple weeks likely but we will see.
