I was interested to see if Chris will post some tasks in the tracker that definitely relate to the development of version 8. I would like to start making some modest contributions next month but I want to make sure that the money spent will be incorporated into version 8 features or implementation.

It would be great if you could identify Tracker issues which will be incorporated into version 8.

Hi Bob,

This is much appreciated although we don't really accept donations because we are a business. You are welcome to sponsor specific features you want though. You just need to check the cost it shows on the tracker, make sure you have enough support credits, then open up a ticket requesting that to be developed. You may also want to make sure that the issue is specific/detailed for your needs before going ahead, by e.g. posting on the tracker to confirm certain things would be included in that.

Until we believe we have enough funding for a big new release, we're not going to think of things in terms of 'v8'. It's more likely to go like 7.2, 7.3 etc, assuming we feel that it's the right decision to incorporate the implemented feature into the public releases and not hold it back a bit. Regardless, you'd be supplied with an addon for the feature that you could chose to share.

Also me calling this 'feature sponsorship' is not 100% accurate, because there's really no difference to our normal client support – you can request us develop anything, whether we'd include it in ocPortal or not. So whilst I see you're looking to advance ocPortal, don't also feel constrained personally in that way. We've done quite a few custom features in the past, some incorporated (e.g. Comcode tabs), some not (e.g. pay-by-SMS block).

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Gotcha. I am really just looking for ways to help advance ocPortal. Since my coding skills are not up to par, I've decided that I will try to make some monetary contributions that will really be nothing more than a drop in the bucket for what you need to accomplish v8. And, of course, I will evangelize when I can.

While I think there is significant room for improvement, I feel confident that I made the right choice for a CMS every day.
