We've recently had a couple of different clients confused about what 'Guest' means, and thinking about it from an outside perspective I can see why it's confusing– there's nothing in the word 'Guest' to specifically imply 'Not logged in', as it could equally simply mean 'our welcome guest'.

So we're considering renaming it, and would like opinions.

I selected the rename option.

My 2 cents worth is to rename to "Visitor"

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

Visiteur (visitor) is what we use for most french sites.
We use guest (invité) when an invitation has been sent.
Makes 4 cents, i guess  ;)

I like visitor.

Doesn't ocf allow the admin to change it like ipb?

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

You can change it, but the issue is getting good defaults :). To change it you'd need to rename the Guests usergroup then change all the language strings that have the word 'Guest' in.

Oh and Anonymous would not make since as you can be logged in as Anonymous at least in other systems you can.

Well, in ocPortal you can make 'anonymous posts' and you can log in as 'invisible', which kind of does the same thing – but I think the renaming would make sense.

Not that I have a strong opinion, this is why I am asking  .

Any plans on making the change simplier like ipb?
I mean just change the group name and not the language as that maybe should be set to automatically see what you have it set at and display that at least it makes since.

Yes indeed and I would get confused if guests/ visitors/ none logged in members were called anonymous since I am so used to that meaning some thing else on IPB. On ipb it hides you from the online list and people see you as logged off when you are infact logged on so making it so people can not see where you are on the forum or that you are on the forum. On ocf there is not much point in invisible as you can not see where the member is at in the online list.

Just my opinion.

How about making the non logged in "guest" say something active like ""Viewing" - as Visitor has an implication that the person does not have an account, when they might. "viewing" would imply that to do more than just view, they should register and/or log in

Unless guest permissions are enabled so they can actually do more than just view. Then they really could be doing more than just "viewing".

I like the "Visitor" renaming.

Making it easily changeable, without editing language files, would obviously be the ideal solution, so that each person could tailor the non logged in user wording to suit their membership/community.

I think Visitor would be great instead of using Guest. I was wondering could it be simple as going to security>usergroups>edit user groups and select the guest and just rename the title and not the *name, or would that still mess with the language files.

like this
*NAME : Guests
Title: Visitor

Everyone is a visitor of a site regardless of what there community status might be. Visitor is also a very vanilla web analytics term that again applies to everyone. IMHO that is about as good as Guest - no gain there.

I'm partial to the "social" and "community" terminology as follows:

nonmember < a reminder to the visitor that they are not experiencing all they can be. Membership is almost always connected to greater benefit and use of a service. To the site owner, a clear delineation between members and nonmembers.

^that was my 2 cents

and below are my 2 kretma < points for knowing the reference>

The remainder are just fun, but I would argue relevant depending on the site:

outsider
transient
drifter
sojourner
stranger

I also support an easily changeable solution. Let the community owner decide what is best for their community. See above.

Non-member to me seems outcastish.

But you do have a very good point that everyone (registered or not) is a visitor. To me, tho… members are part of the family (or community) as a title of visitor is not. And like you mentioned, as a visitor (non-member, your preference) you aren't experiencing the family part of it.

Exactly.

That is why I prefer the nonmember.

It is accurate in every sense and just shy of kicking someone in the :o

hehe, seriously though… it's Politically Correct and stirs something deep inside a person, driving them toward what we all want MEMBERSHIP. I think it works well. It's what I will use on my sites. ;)

but that is just me.

To me…. it wouldn't drive me to register but feel like you are forcing me to register. That is why I still prefer the "Visitor" sense to it.
