Missing Explanation

I don't see the effect of using this whether the test passed or failed:

"You may put a line starting with a ‘:’ and followed by an explanation, below all answers to a question, which will be displayed with the correct answer as the explanation for the answer once the quiz has been completed."

Quiz said

If there are 3 apples and you take away 2, how many do you have?
2[*]1
4
0
:If you took 2 ,you have 2

Confused me too. It's a usability issue. The label would better say…

"…You may put a line starting with a ‘:’ and followed by an explanation, below each answer to a question, which will be displayed with the correct answer as the explanation specifically why the given answer was wrong or right, once the quiz has been completed."

i.e. You do something like:

Code

If there are 3 apples and you take away 2, how many do you have?
2 [*]
:Well done, that's right: if you took 2 you do indeed have 2.
4
:No, if you took 2, you have 2.
0
:No, if you took 2, you have 2.

i.e. You can tailor your response to each thing they answered.
Better example…

Code

Who invented the telephone?
Alexander Graham Bell
:Bell is credited as the inventor, but this is very widely disputed.
Antonio Meucci
:Meucci may have been the inventor of a telephone-like device, before Bell, but it is unclear if this is distinctly what we now consider a telephone, given there have been telephone-like devices for a long time and significant differences to Bell's invention.
Unsure [*]
:Correct, it is very unclear who invented the Telephone given that there is no distinct delineation between levels of communication technology leading up to the conventional 'Phone'.

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Thank you Chris for this detailed explanation.

It is indeed more complex than first understood from the original text, but the added functionality and possibilities as a teaching tool is worth the efforts. The "Completion Report" is working great and makes the ocPortal Quiz an excellent teaching aid.

Thank you.:)
