Every visit to this Forum, which happens several times a day in my case, I am shown that there is/are new posts in a "Protected Forum". Opening up the forum titled "Developing" shows no new posts, so I have to assume that the "Protected Forum" is getting quite a few exchanges of posts which I am either, 'protected FROM' or 'protected AGAINST'. Either way, I am not really interested in stuff that is supposedly being discussed which is not for my eyes, but I would rather NOT be notified of them, either.

Can the staff take the appropriate steps?

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

LOL I sent a ticket asking the same thing.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

This is the defined behaviour, and it's how a lot of forums actually do it. One good reason for it is a lot more efficient.

You're seeing that because I've made a post in a Developer discussion forum. :)

Is it a place customers do not have access to then?
I thought customers had access to every thing except staff talk.

It's a Privileged Developer discussion forum; only viewable to members in the Privileged Developer usergroup, and staff of course. :P

Ami, can you explain this? It appears you've made the last post in the 'Website Comments' forum, however when I open the forum, that topic isn't in there. :/

I have no idea I am not able to see that post either, could be that it was deleted.

We'll consider reviewing this behaviour for version 4 now that two people have brought it up. I'm not sure how realistic it is to change this without causing inefficiency, but we'll look at it in some detail, at an appropriate juncture.

There is only a tiny trickle of discussion in protected forums, with the exception of the staff forums.

With regard the comments forum thing – I made a small permission change yesterday that had a slight knockon effect. Nothing's deleted though.

Become a fan of ocPortal on Facebook or add me as a friend. Add me on on Twitter.
Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

So I can not view or edit my own comments?
I thought they were ok as the link was in your siggy.
I do want to help and I am really taking these classes.
I know I did bad on the test 50 out of 100, I feel bad about getting that many wrong but I want to help out in any way I can, not just by making skins/ themes or mods but helping to make the whole product better and faster.

Chris, I'm not sure what it is you cite as 'inefficiency', but here's the rub . . .
  • I visit a Forum and check the indicators for unread posts.
  • I read the unread posts.
  • When I've read the posts, the indicator changes to tell me that there are no unread posts in that Forum.
  • When I visit the (currently) 'Developing' Forum I see NO unread posts, but the indicator continues to tell me that there are . . .

I am not given this indication when there are unread 'Staff posts', or 'Personal topics' or 'Whispers', so I'm unclear why posts in a 'Protected Forum' keep showing up for all and sundry to be notified. I don't really care if there are a hundred 'Protected Forums' - I just don't want to be told that there are posts in there that are 'unread', and which I can't see in any case!

Thank goodness my users don't have the nous to start building their own 'Protected Forums' . . .

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

To be honest I could not agree more and I know IPB does not do this. I have several protected forums. staff talk, a forum just for me for database changes and installed mods/ add ons, and a recycle bin and if a member is not allowed in those they see no new posts indection for them.

And if it was set the way me and you (fletch) think it should be I would not be feeling the way I do. (heart broken, just the way I am, a female thing)

I don't see what the big deal is here. Is it a real bother to see a forum indicator telling you there's a new post in a forum you don't have access to? I don't see why people cannot just ignore them…

Its a bother do to thinking there is a new post and there is not one you can read.
Not to mention my emotional  break down knowing there is some thing I want to be involved in when I can not be and that makes me cry.
The only way to change the icon was to click on makr read icon.

Its not really curiosity any more its more like a feeling of being left out and it makes me feel even worse cuz I try very hard to help ocPortal out I feel I am not wanted or my help is not wanted.
Thats why I want to cry, and I know its probably not true but it does not stop me from feeling that way. I have a lot of emotions and I really want to help specially with version 4.

I just hope I did not or do not make chris mad, I want him to know how much I care about his system and how much I want to help.

I want to help with support  and do try every time I am here.

The customer group is infact the one with highest prestige from our perspective.

You shouldn't feel left out - you have a higher success and importance to ocProducts than I. :)

Thanks I hope some day to be able to do all the forum support for Chris so he has time for more important things. Do you think I will every be able to do that?

I believe people can do whatever they set their mind to. Doing all the forum support would be out of your hands obviously, but helping out is always appreciated.

…so he has time for more important things

I think Chris' most important task at this point is visiting the site however frequently he does. Of course, I couldn't agree with you more about Chris being able to do other things not relating to ocPortal, such as vacations, etc.. I don't know what his daily life consists of, but I doubt he has time for any of these types of things. Maybe that day will come when he can just sit back, relax, go on a long vacation, whatever. :)

I personally think he looks forward to visiting the site on a daily basis. I know if I had something this popular (well, I've never had a site/business as popular as ocProducts), I'd highly look forward to seeing what the community is talking about and help people with their technical inquiries. You must also know that this is his job (or so from what I know), and any director would attend their job on a daily basis.
