php5.2 link

It came out and was wondering if ocPortal will work with it?
I hope so because I am going to upgrade to it soon.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

Why don't you use OC Forums

OneRing said

Whats wrong with OC Portal Forums.. We should start a thread witrh a list of the real issues and take a look at others.

We thought OC did quite a good job actually with the forums. The security you can apply on forum groups is to say the least "wonderous"..  Especially if you start mucking around with low range, mid range and high range variables. The only thoughts I have that could improve would be the way the sub threads display into more like a Microsoft Explorer view perhaps. I have attached a pic from Yahoo Groups that has that kind of display.

Since OC have deployed ver 3.15 the WISIWIG editor is vastly improved again by way of HTML context related help when it detects an issue or code error. I found that most of my post issues related to a missing syntax where I had left out a character like a closed square bracket. It didnt quite tell me exactly where but its miles better than previous.

Also attached is a popular forum at www.exetel.com.au our ISP for your viewing pleasure.

I suggest that Amichan creates a thread relating to Forum enhancements and posts what she believes should be in a forum so we can take a look at what might be improved. I for one am very unclear as to what really is wrong with it. It is well integrated into the points system and when I went to amichan's site I found many ipb features wouldnt work within OC so why bother with it?

I might be missing something Amichan so sock it to me if I am as I am pretty new to foruming in general … I thought we had moved on from foruming to talking on the phone in video cam conference calls.   My thoughts were to integrate Microsofts Communication server into OC and give streaming video forums. Any takers?

I think we need to think leading edge here to get OC up the front with say MS Sharepoint Portal server and that type application suite. Why muck about in the lower end of the market that has no money with such a core product like OC Portal.. . Sure give it away so every one uses it and builds up a core user base but limit the real exciting leading edge functions like integrated video forums (Supply yr own web cam) to the paying community.

You can do those different views in IPB.
And the members of your forum have a choice to have it that way yahoo has it or expanded.

As I said in my other post I have been using IPB far longer then ocPortal and in fact found ocPortal when looking for more things to add to my IPB site.
I in fact am working on making add ons for ocPortal that will make it better then IPB.
Just look at the add ons forum and you will see.
My members would probably kick my butt or all leave if I switched to only ocPortal.
I like the system but not the forum part of it.

Also I should add I am also working on making the integration between ipb and ocPortal seamless

I have ocpower.info dedicated to ocPortal cuz I like the system.

But you are using OCPortal and in the section on comparissons on other portals you only show a competitor portal and no comparison with OCPortal.

I don't want to be mean Amichan but if that list in your addon's (posted 24 October) is it then you better not think of retiring soon. A gallery fix, a page load timer and a clock are hardly the sorts of enhancements people will get that excited about or want are they? I did note your blue theme and PhP loader in a different section were additional.

I clicked on yr members list and it showed an error as you were not using OCP.
I accept that comment you make but where is the definitive list of things you do not like in OCP forums/foruming. No where in the posts have I been able to see or read a definitive list from you that says or shows what exactly the issues are and some screen pics of what you believe is the best part of the forums you like. What I am looking for is a comment that says I like IPB because …. 1 - 50 in a list … You sound like you are quite an expert in IPB and other forums so it would be interetsing to hear what you have to say about that. Is it for example the "Active Topics list right hand side view" that you like or "The fact it displays the forum moderators for each forum"?

Have you a comparisson list for example feature by feature…?

IAlso I should add I am also working on making the integration between ipb and ocPortal seamless
How will non technical people decide on which forum to use? If they get OCPortal how do you propose to let them know this "additional great forum is available?" I guess iit might be similar to if you buy Windows XP then go and get Open source office rather than get the integrated Office 2007..

I have ocpower.info dedicated to ocPortal cuz I like the system.

Yes indeed you are certainly an OCPortal fan which is highly commendable and I look foward to reading more from you..

I am just starting this. I have been having a bit of trouble not to mention its been busy.
I am sorry the comparisoins are not what you expect. Right now I do not have any up as I had a problem with OCportal and have not installed the patch yet.
I have not gotten to the add ons for the same reason.
Work has been very busy and your not being very fair.
I am doing all I can to help ocPortal and making it a better system and all your making me want to do is give up, the reason you make me want to give up is I went though all the trouble to make a comparision thread for you and all you did was reply to this instead of the comparision thread.
http://ocportal.com/forum/pg/topicview/misc/6170/index.php&kfs233=0

The add ones I have listed are ones people want that have come to me asking for them.
not to mention some are just ones I went.

I will say again I am working as hard as I can.
Right now I am having trouble with FTP at work so I can not do any thing here at work.

It's fantastic that Ami's planning on making addons for herself and other users. It would be even better if lots of people took her own commendable approach :). Let's not put all the pressure on any one person – I'd much rather everyone who wanted something more than ocPortal can currently do actually work towards resolving their own needs – and then people "muck together" wherever appropriate.

EDIT: I just want to make it clear that I'm talking about the things that ocProducts isn't working on and can't, for economic reasons, deliver individually. I also want to make it clear that by "resolving their own needs", I mean anything from learning programming to paying someone in India – whatever the user deems appropriate.

Become a fan of ocPortal on Facebook or add me as a friend. Add me on on Twitter.
Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Absolutely NO arguments from me on that.

What I was trying to say and obviously very poorly  :'( was that Amichan is taking a very tough road and not doing herself any favours by trying to import a forum that is not built in the core product.  If she was able to explain what is missing in the FORUM piece I am happy to work on the design and feature/function list with the existing OCPortal product to try and get that up to Amichan's high standard. There was no intention or any meaning in relation to her efforts being inadequate or that they were not appreciated. Of course those efforts are MUCH appreciated… However one reads all these posts from various posters who comment they do not like this or that but very few take the time and trouble to explain exactly what it is they don't like. Surely it is reasonable to expect just a few additional comments about what is not right so others can shed a different view on what might even be better and try and come up with a generally accepted solution which can be coded in a release.. O_o .

Please accept all the thread as a constructive commentary with only the intentions to assist Amichan further in her endevours.

Why is it there if I am not supposted to use it?

Why is it a part of the system if you are now telling me it is pointless.
I honestly do not think Chris would have made an pointless feature.

I am really confused now. I thought you were trying to use and install a forum engine that is NOT made by OCPOrtal

I have a problem though my ipb now does not work with 5.2 of php.

I have never said it was pointless those are your words. I have said it will be more difficult because it is not an embedded core forum engine. The forum thread I raised was why would you use ipb and you said because you like it and thats fine. I then said what do you like about it and got into some strife along the way.

Those 2 quotes are unrelated
Yes I use IPB as my forum and have it linked as the forum for ocPortal because you can have several different forums.  There is a list some where on the this site that lists the forums that work with ocPortal.
Also I said I was able to fix the problem with IPB that you quoted about.

As I mentioned before IPB was installed first, in fact ipb has been installed for almost a year now and ocPortal has only recently been added.

I will make a thread about the Built in import feature later.
