Want to run a photo contest. How to?

I want to run a photography contest in my site using OcPortal. Is it possible?  Where user can upload photo to the contest section, vote either his photo, one vote per user, special rules to agree to upload and take part in the contest, result of vote, automatic closure after closing date, result of user choice and editorial choice. I am learning ocportal in local machine.Thanks.

Unfortunately, I don't think this is available without some significant customization. The only part really in place in the current release is the ability to upload submissions to the Image of the Day module. You would then need to use a poll to determine the user choice but the poll entries would have to be set manually. If you could tie these modules together somehow, you would probably have 80-90 percent of what you desire. You would need to implement the editorial choice manually or you could use a separate IOTD block for the user and editorial choices.

I think you can be a bit more creative rk1041.

Create a contest gallery.

have the participants upload the photos to it.

Have the community comment and rate the photos.

Announce a winner based on views, rating, comments, or whatever your weighing factor is.

you have all the functionality available to do it now, without modification.

 one vote per user…

I believe the rating system already takes care of this - you can only rate something once.

special rules to agree to upload and take part in the contest…

You could create a landing page that links to the Contest Gallery with some comcode to show the link to gallery only after they have accepted the agreement.

the results can be calculated and show with comcode aggregating the ratings per item id in the gallery and declaring a winner based on highest rating.  The automatic closure not sure it can be done without some heavy lifting - but you could close it with read only permissions to the gallery.

The results could be displayed on the landing page for the contest and or a Contest over Page and of course you disable the contest entry page.

It's not perfect, but I think you can get there without coding up a storm.

That's an interesting approach, Noob, but it does miss a couple of requirements: enforced single vote and contest closing date.

Still not a bad approach if he can work around these limitations.

Indeed, I refined my suggestion. I realized I pulled the trigger to quickly on my first response.

Thank You BobS

Very nice solution, Noob.

I think he only wanted members to be able to vote for a single item. The ratings approach would allow them to assign a rating to each entry. But you would still be able to get the highest-rated item which seems like an affective workaround.

Thanks to all. You are quite right Bob.I want to prevent anonymous voting and members to vote for his own photo. They shall be able to vote only three nos. of photo based on choices such as first,2nd and 3rd.

I believe ocP has a countdown block too. Voting is restricted one per IP address

Just to inform you that it is nearly  impossible to stop users from voting for his own entry. Believe me I helped a friend of mine burst towards top 20 in a very large photocontest designed to exactly the way you asked but unfortunately TCP/IP is inherently too insecure to accomplish your needs and and still be accessable to a majority. Proxying and spoofing is just impossible to stop without locking out pretty much all your legitimate traffic too. So be aware cheaters are gonna try and you can simply warn em the could be disquallified if the cheat and do some log file monitoring but again  nearly impossible to know for sure who's doin what. The only way to be as fair as possible is allow a panel to judge only. (well at least it might be a little closer to fair but again anything with human interaction is open to injustice)

That's why I changes all reference of Image of the Day to Editor's Pick. I am dealing with the works of a dead artist but decided we will let a group of knowledgeable people decide what submissions are the best.

Of course, many of the artist's best works are already known and not likely to be submitted by someone unknown but then again he was a prolific painter who could turn out art quite quickly.
