eCommerse Store add on

First I want to throw a plug out there and say "Good Job" on this portal system.

My question is how hard would it be to integrate an eCommerse store with in this portal system? The online shopping cart system I was thinking about using was Zen-Cart. I already added a new zone called store and got the header, footer and left side menu setup that was the easy part. I can also can use the existing Sql DB for the Zen-Cart DB. I'm just at a loss about adding in the cart system to this one.

Thanks,

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Hey Chris,

I know I read somewhere that you were considering adding shopping cart functionality to OCP but I can't remember where I read it. I just wanted to say that if that is still true Zen is an awesome product. I have used it on a couple of e-commerce sites that I have created and it is truly a dream to use. Not sure if you have ever used it or looked at it but it is open source so if you did an integration with it like you have with some of the more popular forums it would add an incredible amount of value to OCP. Just my 2 cents…

If this is something you looking at implementing for the future my vote goes for x-cart...also open source.

Sledge,

Unless I am missing something X-Cart is not Open Source, Open Source software is free and X-Cart is not free. X-Cart is based on Open Source code but the price for the cheapest license is $229 at http://www.x-cart.com

You are correct Rick.

There is a cost to own the license (lifetime) but once owned its completely open source with a huge modding community.

I guess this would be similar to how IBP operates now but their license is not lifetime  :(

Ok, here is another question.  Would having 2 DB's cause issues?  like ocPortal using _ocf4 and zen-cart automatically sets up _zc.  My first thought is going to be 2 different member logins and I'm wanting to keep just one. Ideas??

It's been a long time since I've used Zencart, but the trick here would be to have Zen use OCP's user table for authentication. I would have to take a peak at it. IIRC, Zen is based off the oscommerce backend. If I'm correct, it may be worthwhile having a cruise around oscommerce website and see what others are doing to accomplish this.
