This is an observation, a suggestion and a request, all rolled into one.

I have observed that when the ocPortal Server is down that my local Admin page takes an interminable age to load. It DOES eventually load, but it can take up to 7 minutes for the page to show.

I am assuming that this slow load is, in effect, the page function trying to call the ocPortal Server for the information that is displayed in the "Version Information" box, and that it hangs while trying to get this information, ultimately displaying the message that the server cannot be reached.

If my 'wild' assessment is right, can something be added to the script to tell the page to load after a certain lapsed time, regardles of whether the information is available?

This is not browser-specific. I tried IE7 (my default), Firefox, Opera and finally, in desperation, Netscape. Same 'slow-load' for each. OS is Vista with the built-in security features activated (especially the irritating phishing filter). The computer is a recent buy and a high-spec monster.

Any thoughts on this would be welcome. Thanks.

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

Well-settled

I have the same problems indeed. Also I have a Vista machine. Most thing where it on hangs is the logo the right. Page is loaded but very slow.

Thanks Harry

Hi Fletch,

You have a very valid point, and we'll be looking into this.

For an explanation of the current state of affairs, please see this topic:

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

I was trying to make some blocks that would work with the arcade and the site was going slow and yesterday and today this site would not load to find out what was going on.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.
