I'm pondering to switch to ocPortal. We currently have a Subdreamer site with an integrated SMF forum, but forum integration is no longer supported by Subdreamer.

To the ocCommunity, I have two questions:

1) Does anyone have experience running a ocPortal Site with an integrated SMF forum? If so, is it still live?

2) Is it possible to import existing SMF forum data into the ocPortal forum? I read about an importer, but it doesn't mention SMF specifically.

Thanks for any answers!

We actually did have a member have ocPortal with an SMF integration (Brian Hay), but he's fallen off the face of the internet right now and so has his sites.  :(  … They worked perfectly fine.

As for importing, hope someone else can answer that for you. I happen to use ocPortal's forums for all the sites I installed ocPortal on.

Tried to run the SMF importer yesterday but failed miserably. The step-by-step thing went ok, but as soon as it came to import the Posts, it kept running into the 15s timeout. The forum I tried to import was pretty small (about a dozen members and a couple hundred postings).

However, I just went with the Wizard and didn't read up on all the documentation so I can't tell if it was my fault.

Does your server have safe mode on? (If you go to the PHP-info in Tools under the Admin Zone it should say).

A 15s timeout is low (30s is the default), and safe mode stops scripts raising it.

  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.
