Chris,

Can you give any information with respect to version 10?  Specifically, I think I'll upgrade the MPAG site that is currently on v.8 and go to v.10 when it's available -- I'm curious as to:

When you think it may be released?
What the changes are between 9 and 10?
Any special items/issues to be aware of?

I am going to make the assumption that themes that broke with version 9, also won't work with version 10.

Cheers!

Mark

Hi,

v10 is a long way away still. I generally tell people not to expect it this year, and there's no development schedule as such – more a set of architectural upgrades that we want to accomplish in it, and whatever features are sponsored/needed in the interim. A huge amount of progress is done, and 2 developers are working on it full time right now (I'm one of them ;)), but it is going to be a major upgrade (perhaps not in terms of lots of very visible feature changes, but major architectural improvements).

From a themeing point of view, it is expected to be compatible with v9 themes, definitely not v8 themes. We'd love to convert the v8 themes, but I doubt we'll have a way we can get it funded in the near term.

  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

Perhaps there will be some in the community that would volunteer to convert the v8 themes to v9 compatibility? Who knws?

They're welcome to, and I'd agree to guarantee the converted themes could be released for free on v9. It would not be an easy task though to identify each change made to the old ocPortal, and reapply to the new ocPortal. It could be done though by someone who was good at diffing to identify changes made in the original instances, then manually reapplying them.

Thanks for the update Chris, always good to know what's coming down the road!  I understand about the architectural changes, although I haven't done coding for many years, I know that how the app is built and designed makes a huge difference in how it functions and interacts with DB's and such.  Will look for v10 in 2014 perhaps!

No worries on the themes, it's just a bummer that there are so many great themes out there for v8 and they're not immediately usable on 9 or 10, but sometimes that's the price of progress.

A special shout-out to Mr. Fletch for the fun graphic too, LOL!!
