is there a way to get a link using the link blocks to make one link in a block to only be viable by one or more groups?

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

Hi,

In a sense. There's a "check permissions" tickbox for each menu item. If you tick that, ocPortal will check zone/page permissions on the link, only showing it to those that have the permissions to go to it. (Then you would set the permissions to that page accordingly)

  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

ok but that will not work for external pages that I know of.

Ah I see, no it wouldn't. In this situation I'd either:
  • use the 'if_in_group' tag to show different menus to different groups.
  • simply add a Comcode page that links to the external page, put a "You are exiting the main site" message on it and a link, and then set permissions for that and put that on the menu.
  • put it into the templates.

For the third, you'd need to do something like this.
Edit MENU_BRANCH_tree.tpl to:

Code

{+START,IF,{$OR,{$NEQ,{URL},http://somefilteredsite/},{$IS_IN_GROUP,3,4,5}}}
<li class="{CURRENT_PAGE*}">
   {CONTENT}
</li>
{+END}
That's just an (untested) example, and would apply only to the tree menu type of course). It only grants groups 3,4,5 access to that URL.
