This is some thing I recently came across in vBulletin as a friend has that script and is letting me test it out for a site we are both setting up.
I noticed it had the options for hidden forums some thing ipb does not have.
What a hidden forum does is allow you to make a forum that is not listed in the forum list but if members know what the url to it is they can get to it and post in it.
The reason we are using it on my friends site is for rss feeds as they do not really work in a sub forum as it will take away from the forum it is in by showing subforum posts instead of the posts that are in that forum.  (Reminds me of the problem me and fletch had with a subforum post showing in a forum neither of us could get into) sort of like that except I do want to allow members into it.

Another reason for it set up like this is to save space if you have a long list of forums.

Oh and what we did on my friends site in order to get there is we put it in the navigation menu.

So I was wondering if ocf can have or does have hidden forums that work this way.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

I don't use OCF, and I could be wrong, but I highly doubt it.

If there's such 'scripts' available for IPB, I'm assuming most software developers don't implement this kind of feature (which explains why 3rd party developers are making these 'modifications'), and thus a modification to OCF's code would be required to do something like this.

Just my 2-cents. :)

It is possible to fake it a bit. You could add a forum and remove it's access, but then add a subforum to that forum that did have access. The effect would be the second forum would not be seen as it would not be navigatable.

Become a fan of ocPortal on Facebook or add me as a friend. Add me on on Twitter.
Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

I wonder if that would work for IPB as well.

Just tried that with ipb and nope does not work. If your not allowed in the parent forum you can not get to the sub forum.

One of the suggestions ips gave me was to use a portal and have it pull from that hidden forum and that can be done though ocportal using the forum news feature.
