View Count, Tags, Sharing, embed code, favorites, ajax updates, etc...

I revised this post several times before finally committing to the following.

The Galleries are very disappointing. There is really little there in the way of "gallery" that is defacto standard on the web today.

I would expect that by default all galleries would show the following information:

View Count
Upload Date
Tags
Sharing feature - "viral sharing - links to share to other social mediums"
tell a friend - email
embed code
favorites - add to users favorites if logged in.
ajax updates, so as to not bother the user while they view the video and multitask with these options.
Most popular - Today, this week, this month, all time
Highest rated - Today, this week, this month, all time
Most discussed - Today, this week, this month, all time

There is no way to fullscreen that I can see.

Ah perhaps I'm being to critical of the system. I'm sure that the underpinnings are all there for these things to be made available. I took a quick look at the db and I do see attributes in the videos and images for views and the rest of the data could be pulled from the db via various queries.

It just seems to me that the default install should have much more robust galleries, than what they currently are now.

Please enlighten me, Is there some simple way to accomplish what I've stated above?
If not, I'd like to suggest that OCP take a good look at their Galleries offering and consider rethinking it.

I would like to see these first foremost.

Also for all the above he mentioned, it would be nice see those options for the downloads as well.  :)

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback.

These are all available but commented out in the GALLERY_ENTRY_SCREEN template.
The thing is, different people want different things from galleries, and everyone has their own view on what they should be. A lot of people just want something very plain to share some media. I think you're wanting more of a media community thing. Our default templates verge on the basic and people can add on extra features if they want to.

Sharing feature - "viral sharing - links to share to other social mediums"
tell a friend - email
favorites - add to users favorites if logged in.

You can include this in any template by adding:
{$BLOCK,block=main_screen_actions}
Customise it via editing the template of corresponding name. We don't have a lot of services on there by default (things change too fast for us to keep up, plus I think most of these features on sites go really overboard and use icons people can't relate to and never use).

embed code

You'd have to code something in yourself, but it shouldn't be too hard. I don't think it's likely we'd do this, as it's not one of the common use cases on most sites.

ajax updates, so as to not bother the user while they view the video and multitask with these options.

Possibly for the future. It's a tricky thing to get right because we have to keep our templates flexible, avoid duplicating markup in templates and Javascript (would make it hard to theme), and keep things accessible by not requiring Javascript.

There is no way to fullscreen that I can see.

This would be down to the individual players. I'm not sure about what the jwplayer can do, we just use the default settings, but it can be configured.

We'll consider these.

Thx Chris, this is both great and encouraging new.

Uncommented the following by removing <!- and -> in GALLERIES_ENTRY_SCREEN and don't see anything different? :(

<!-<br />
<p class="standard_meta_block">
{!ADDED,{ADD_DATE*}}{+START,IF,{$INLINE_STATS}}
. {!VIEWS,{VIEWS*}}{+END}
</p>->

I looked at the templates in use when you click on Galleries in the left side blocks nav, GALLERIES_ENTRY_SCREEN is not one of them, nor is it any of the templates for when your actually in the gallery or sub galleries? When is GALLERIES_ENTRY_SCREEN called?

The template I do see being called throughout is the GALLERY_FLOW_MODE_SCREEN and I tried adding it there, but got a add_date variable was not passed and so on for the rest above. In this same template, I added {$BLOCK,block=main_screen_actions} and it works like a champ :thumbs:.

Hi,

You'll need to turn off the flow-mode setting in the gallery you're in. I don't think this stuff works in the flow-mode galleries, although I note perhaps it would be better if it did.

Turned off flow-mode still nothing.

I looked at the templates in use now and GALLERY_ENTRY_SCREEN is not in there.

I do see
GALLERY_PER_PAGE_CHOICE (5)
GALLERY_REGULAR_MODE_SCREEN (1)
GALLERY_SUBGALLERY (1)

I tried that code in GALLERY_REGULAR_MODE_SCREEN and get this:

A parameter, ADD_DATE, is referenced in the template, GALLERY_REGULAR_MODE_SCREEN, but not passed

It's only when you click through to view an image/video, not by the thumbnail itself. We'll consider this for the future.

Chris my apologies for being a complete idiot here.

Wow, I see it now at the very bottom of the page below comments on the actual viewing page for the video or graphic.

Thx, I can work with this and bring it up to were Rating, Trackbacks are and give them the same look and feel.

I agree that these attributes should be available throughout the gallery metaphor so that the site owner can choose to display them or not.

I'd love to be able to show the the gallery with a thumbnail, title, views, rating, upload date.

Thank you for your patience and great support! :thumbs:
