Understanding _SELF and _SEARCH

From the Doc I read this:

ocSite Structure Tutorial- Entry Points/ Page Links

If you do not want to hard-code what zone to use, you may specify either '_SEARCH' or '_SELF' as the zone name in the page link. '_SEARCH' will cause ocPortal to dynamically find the module involved, whilst '_SELF' will use the same zone as the page link is dynamically being interpreted in (e.g. If if it used on a menu in the site zone, '_SELF' will be equivalent to 'site').

Could someone please explain further the benifits of this? More of an example of  WHEN  and WHY I would want to use these please? It might be that I am stilll a little confused over the zones part and therefore missing why one might value this method over the more hardcoded zone name?

It's more of use to us, so we code ocPortal with less assumptions about where modules are.

  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about Composr whenever you see the opportunity or support me on Patreon.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying Composr on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.
