We have received sponsorship very kindly from both BobS and Hitch for upgrades to the catalogues system.

I am now going to sit down and work my ass of on it, and hopefully over-deliver. I might post some updates here as I go.

  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Currently looking into HTML5 input fields, trying to make sure the updated catalogues field system aligns with what HTML5's forms are focusing on.

The catalogue field hooks are now the ocPortal fields API, and they now have support for run-time generated field types. That means you can now have a field type that is a reference to another catalogue entry in a specific catalogue.

Now working on new field types. Here's my raw notes. Can't guarantee they'll all be done, especially the last 3….

Ok, not qr codes, realised it's pointless - best if a QR code is an encoded URL, and the entry already has a URL. So someone maybe one day will write an addon or widget (does not need to be ocPortal) then generates a QR code for the current URL.

I am happy to be able to help in my small way. I think everyone should think about how much of a benefit ocPortal is to them and, if they can, help to sponsor an issue. Maybe you have some support credits sitting in your account that you can spare.

The way I see it this does not make ocPortal any less free but it certainly helps make ocPortal that much better.

I am really excited to see ocPortal grow.

I forgot to mention in my above post (in case anyone missed the original - http://ocportal.com/forum/topicview/misc/need-some-free-support_2.htm) that you can get support points for referring agency clients to ocProducts who spend a minimum of £1000. These points could then be used to sponsor improvements in ocPortal or to use for your own custom code. This is a win-win for ocPortal and you. So get to working those address books to earn yourself some free support points.

Thanks to The Sponsors and Chris for making this happen! I am soo excited to see it underway!

BTW one more Catalogue improvement I would like to see (and I know this is not something that can be added to this current workload but for future reference) is an ability to choose a template layout in the drop down for catalogue display choices. IE you could simply spit out xml or an array of fields and values type thing that gets populated through a template so one can have more flexibility in layout of an entry (or better yet listings too) by desiging their own html layout that is parsed.

Duck-

I was just thinking about this yesterday - it is something that was available in the e-commerce software I used that made it easy for mere mortals to have different display formats available.

You should enter this into the tracker so that Chris can put a number on it.

This already exists. Notice the catalogue templates have 'DEFAULT' in the name - you can copy the files with that substituted to the name of the catalogue. It's even documented ;).

No sign of Chris for hours.

I think we've lost him to an energy drink and power bar induced code-a-thon. He's gotta come up for air soon.

Maybe. But remember that we have already deduced that he can get by on little sleep and lots of energy drinks when he gets into his coding groove.

Actually, I hope he's sleeping too, but can hardly wait to see what the changes are going to bring to the catalogs. Two  items in the tracker have already been marked as done in the past 24 hours.

Actually I did decide to get some sleep. Ran up against a bit of a mental wall creating the new field types - ocPortal has multi-field inputs but they don't yet all allow pre-population of existing data. So continuing again fresh today after I've caught up with tickets etc.
