Well-settled

I've been looking everywhere for something that just does what I need...

I'm new here and new to the whole CMS/Blog/Forum scene.  For the past week I've been trying to find some kind of program/script or series of programs/scripts that will allow me to have a Blog/Forum/Gallery set up.  Specifically what I want is for multiple authors to be able to post to the Blog by e-mail (as well as other ways but the e-mail is pretty key) and have a method of catagorizing where the Blog posts get filed.  (I know right now I could just be talking Wordpress but…)  I also want the Blog posts to automatically generate a new Forum topic and for the Blog comments to just be stored as part of the Forum.  I also would like (though this is less pressing) a nice web gallery where the comments on the pictures are logged on the Forum as well.  Obviously for this all to work everything would have to be tied together so that users login once and then they are set for the whole site. From what I can see ocPortal sounds promising (sorry to hear about things falling apart) but I can't find much info on the Blog side of things and time is pressing enough that I decided I would just ask rather than try and suss out the info myself. Thanks for the help,Geo   PS.  Almost forgot I need an event calendar as well.  It should probably be tied to the Forum too…  Thanks

In a nutshell, everything you asked for there is possible with ocPortal, apart from submission via e-mail, which ocPortal doesn't support. If you wanted this, it would have to be custom-coded for you, but I would point out that few other products would provide such functionality out-of-the-box either. :)

Wow...huh...wow

OK.  Hmmm…I had hoped to be able to allow people to just send an E-mail for the Blog posts.  (I have lazy posters I'm afraid) but if it will do everything else and not make me pound my head on the floor (yes it actually happened…stupid Enigma 2/Wordpress bridge..probably my own fault but still) then my authors will just have to get used to the idea.  Wow.  OK.  I'm going to download and play with the free version and if it does what I need it to I'll likely be back to register it.  Thank you very much and believe me if I like it everyone I know will hear about you.

Very good to hear.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

Ok...this IS pretty cool.

Now If I can just figure out how to get the theme to work the way I want it to.

Anyway.  I was wondering what the permissions for a forum would have to be set at in order for Admin and Super-moderators to be able to post new topics but everyone else only be able to reply to those posts.  I'm trying to create a sort of Blog set up for one of the Forums.

Which brings me to my scond question.  Would it be possible to some how add a "comment" link to the bottom of posts being displayed on the front page from a Forum as news.  I'm probably making this harder than it is.

Let me ask once more for what I really want.  I want the Blog function to intermesh with the Forum.  Any suggestions how I should do this?

Thanks.

That's perfectly possible; use the Permissions Tree Editor. :)

That would have to be done by changing the template used by that block, which shouldn't be too hard for what you're trying to do.

I don't really know what you mean by "intermesh". ;)

Oh...heh. OK

What I mean is that there are quite a few features in the Blog/News feature that the forum doesn't exactly do.  Most of them are pretty minor and if I can figure out how to do it otherwise I won't care.  At any rate.  By Intermesh I meant that the The Blog would work just like it does now.  With Authors and all that stuff and the little RSS feed buttons available and the "comment" link right there.   BUT instead of having the Blog create it's own part of the database to store all the information it just put on the forum. and the "comment" link is just a link to post in the relavent topic of the Forum but otherwise it's just a Blog.  That way feeding the Blog feeds the Forum and there are fewer places to try and keep track of.

All that being said.  IF I can figure out how to get the permissions set for this forum and IF I can figure out how to edit the Template fo this Block I really don't care that much.  The fact you can subscribe to ANY of the forums as a feed makes up for a lot.

So if you could point me in the right direction for the permissions and the Block editor I sure would appreciate it.  I went to the Permission tree editor but I couldn't figure it out.  I'll go look again on the off chance I'm JUST an idot.  O_o

:::edit:::
Well I am a bit of an idiot in that as soon as I looked as the Tree again I got how it worked BUT I'm still not sure what the permissions need to be to allow people to reply but not post.  I currently have the permissions all set to "no" except for "create" and "edit own" lowrange content.

:::edit:::
OK I'm just an idiot.   I hadn't tried opening the site and logging in as a different user (without admin permissions) and seeing what I saw.  When i tested with the little "su" button it looked different but on the forums it still thought I was administration.  So that works just fine now.  Thanks!  :P  How to edit the Blocks is still baffleing me though.

Thanks
Geo

To edit the template for the block, you'll need to find out which templates the block references (generally by looking at the block's code, although you could figure it out by looking at the template tree view of the page which contains the block), and then edit that template.

Thats how I do it and I edited the download page. Made it so I could put a URL in the by feild and have it linkable.
I also moved the download now up to the top.
I am having trouble figuring out how to center the image in the things on the top for rating download stats but thats ok I am having fun.

It's worth pointing out we have something similar (wrt intermeshing) on ocportal.com. There's some code in our blog that shows how we did it.

Become a fan of ocPortal on Facebook or add me as a friend. Add me on on Twitter.
Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

We're hoping to increase the community vibe here, and make sure everyone gets involved! If anybody else has any suggestions on things we can do, please tell us  .
I have been doing that but only a few of my ideas have gone though but those were from 2.6 and they got added to 3. From what I can tell none of my new sugestions have gotten though.  :'(  :$

If any of your suggestions make it through, you'll see them in the next major release of ocPortal.
It's a rule we make that patch releases cannot contain new features.
