Suggestion 1: Enable users to upload more than one file to their gallery (between 3 and 5, for instance) at once.

Currently, users are only able to upload single files. I understand this allows granularity with respect to settings for individual image files, but I'm finding many users just want to dump a quantity of files at once and in the case of galleries that allow many images, this would be more convenient, but not require them to use the bulk upload facility, which I prefer not to allow general users to utilize.

I would prefer a scenario in which users can upload many files at once, but can access the properties of individual files for granular settings by editing the individual properties of images after the fact. This will satisfy both users who want detailed descriptions, as well as those who only want to get their images up quickly and painlessly but who do not need or care for details for individual image files (they simply want them all up for display)

Suggestion 2: Default gallery owner is automatically selected.

Presently, when users add images to their own gallery, they are required to select the '+' icon and select their own user name or it returns an error message. This is a redundant and often confusing aspect of gallery usage for users. If a user is adding images to their own gallery, they should only be focused on searching their local computer for images to upload, and the destination gallery (their own personal gallery) should not require them to select their own user name for each upload.

Again, these are suggestions I would happily code and test if I had the smarts, but sadly do not (I would be a disaster there :'()

The gallery (in my estimation) will become a major focal point for many portal deployments…if not THE focal point. With only some minor user/management improvements, it will be a stellar selling point.

Thanks.

ocP has a really cool feature that allows you to bulk upload many images at once into a gallery by using a ZIP or TAR file. Check out the tutorial at ocPortal Tutorial: Advanced galleries http://ocportal.com/docs/tut_adv_galleries.htm

Hello,

Agreed there is a facility for such mass uploading, however, I believe this is more suited to administrators or very advanced users.

Below is an artist rendering of what I would envision had I the code know-how

Along with this facility, the default owner of the gallery (the logged in user who owns the gallery) would also have to make no selections under *Gallery heading, simply browse and upload.

I'm just thinking aloud here, but with an eye toward making these elements of a website so simple to use "even a caveman can do it". This would seem to be a way of heading off user frustration that leads to them not being a productive site user or causing the site administrator to have to spend inordinate amounts of time explaining various elements to them. Most users are reluctant to ask questions, and simply give up and move on if they find something too complex or not user friendly.

Thanks again for your thoughtful reply. OCP is a fantastic product and over time will be even better.

Hi,

Could you add these two suggestions separately to the tracker please.

Become a fan of ocPortal on Facebook or add me as a friend. Add me on on Twitter.
Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.
