Is it possible? I mean dynamically not coded defaults in the install routine. Is there a way to ask a user installing an add-on for info to add to add the install function for an add-on?

If so what addon might exist that would be a good one for me to study how that is done?

Nope. Maybe you can ask for it on first usage in the main code somewhere.

Code

if (get_value('done_foo_setup')!=='1')
{
   if (count($_POST)==0)
   {
       // Output UI
       ...
   } else
   {
      // Save settings
      ...
      set_value('done_foo_setup','1');
   }
}

As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying Composr on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

I'd probably not want to do that, because I want addon install/uninstall to be fully automated.

You could also throw out an attach_message call in your install code to inform them it needs doing. You could also add a custom task to the staff checklist if you wanted.
