OK total noob here. After some research I went ahead a purchased OC over SD just based on the ability to try it out before purchasing and I felt that I could mold this into what I was looking to do. I must say I'm a bit overwhelmed here to start…plenty of questions to follow O_o

Please ask as many questions as you like :).

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

yay glad you choose oc over sd.
I tried SD once and it messed up my database - it added a lot of useless stuff to the forum part of the database making it hard to uninstall sd as well.
Not to mention it does not have nearly the features oc does.
Any way ask away - I have been busy lately but I will try and answer some.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

Well my original intention was to use IBP as my forum structure mainly because I have a few nice skins and for the subscription features.

So it was a tossup between the two. Anyhow I Choose OC in the end because I'm hoping it will fill my needs. Unfortunately I'm dangerous with html and stink at design so I will need a good developer and designer to form my site over time.

Which brings me to my first question. I want to add a news story on the main page and have it link back to the forum with the full article (read the entire story link). Also on the main page below the article I'd like to show a "comments" link showing how many members have posted a comment to the related article in the forum, a Last commented by member name finnaly a post a comment link. So it would look like this

<h1>article title<h1>
                                              Possible image location

date

Article text

More:REad the entire story link                                        7 comments        last comment by membername

is something like this possible in OC ?

Hi,

This is mostly possible, by using the main_forum_news block. The 'Add block' button you see when editing the front page will help you place that.

What is possible:
  • Taking the articles from a news forum
  • Taking you back to the forum with a 'Read more' style link

What is not possible:
  • Using an image
  • Showing how many comments there have been and who's commented

When I say things aren't 'possible', I just mean out-of-the-box. These kind of things can always be written in. If you'd like ocProducts to do this for you please open a ticket (hourly rate for custom work is ₤33 per hour).
