Need some guidance before taking drastic measures

Hi. I used joomla to design my music community site and the end result was not too pleasing especially with the looks of things. So Im asking if you could take a quick look at my site and tell me if ocPortal will be able to be better than the current site. The reason why I was drawn here is because it covers all my features that I will need in one intstall whereas with joomla I have to instal several extensions and then keep each one updated to avoid getting hacked!

The site www.stereoevolution.com
Thanks.

The short answer is YES.

However, your server currently feels like one is treading through treacle. So take a moment to investigate whether your hosting package will support the minimum requirements of ocPortal before you take the leap.

If you decide to go the ocPortal route, ask in these forums for any help you need. In here you'll find a bunch of helpful people only too willing to offer advice and guidance.

Good luck!

Thanks…and I'll speak to my hosting company…I thought they were the best (ipage) and thought the slow loading times were due to my internet connectivity!…didnt even know other people were getting slow load times too. Do you have any ideas what the problem could be with the site loading so slow?

You can have them look into it but the most likely problem is that their servers are oversold - that's how they can offer "unlimited" this-and-that and "free" offers. The old saying about too good to be true is especially apt when it comes to web hosting.

By the way, I knew the site was going to be slow to load but it was so slow I almost clicked away just before it loaded. How many potential visitors do you think wait that long?

I'd be looking for a different host whether or not you switch to ocPortal.

Wow, it's been loading for about 20 seconds now and it still hasn't rendered any of the page structure.

Ok..thanks for the advice. I spoke to ipage yesterday and they said they are having some "technical difficulties"..ya right…so Im just gonna build my site there and if things dont pick up with them in the next week or so I'll be sure to use my "any time moneyback guarantee" to go elswhere.

Any hosts you recommend I check out?

You wouldn't necessarily go too far wrong if you followed the recommendation at the bottom of the page (in the footer) by ocPortal. However, you need to consider your budget and if your site is non-profit, then there are a vast number of 'reasonably-priced' hosts that ought to fit the bill.

Caveat: you get what you pay for!

Also take a look at what Harry-S and Brian Hay have to offer. They are both members of this forum. You can PT either and I'm sure you'll get a quick response.

Good luck.

Wow  your sites location will seriously hurt you it took nearly 25 seconds to load front page Most people would simply not stick around with those slow load times. You need to correct that ASAP or you will not be able to build and sustain a community. As you've already been informed YES ocPortal would be a good switch for you.

It's funny how some website owners don't notice the speed issues with their websites because of their own poor connection.

I'm on 100Mbps here, and I can really notice the slightest lag. That's why we're always making ocPortal run as fast as possible: https://twitter.com/#!/occhris/status/127543503340306432
