When a member applies for a usergroup, where does that request show up? I've been searching all over the admin area and the documents to no joy. The only thing I have been able to find in my admin area that shows up needing validation is forum posts.

The only thing that I know of is the setting in Security->Usergroups labelled "Open membership". I would guess if that is unchecked, then some kind of invitation or validation would be required.

The usergroups that require a validation/approval are properly set. I just need to know where these requests show up so I can validate/approve them. Not a single request has shown up anywhere to be validated/approved that I can find.

It appears this function is broken somewhere between the database and the admin panel as I can see the row in the database table and I have to manually "approve" it there or delete the row to "deny" the request.

I wonder if that is something that gets handled by the cron job? Do you have that set up and running?

Cron is set up and running properly.

I get validation notices for forum posts and news submissions, but not for usergroup requests.

Sorry, I am out of ideas. Hopefully, someone successfully using this feature will be able to help.

Its probably a function that isn't used very much and was never noticed when it broke many moons ago.   ;)

I think Chris G. will be the one to give insight on this one.

By email. Staff address, or the group leader if there is one.

Staff/leaders may browse to view-group screen and activate from there also.

  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

sholzy is right that no email notification arrives when somebody requests to join a Usergroup. The only indication is when a staff member browses the view-group screen.

He is also correct in saying that it is a function that may have broken in the past, but never reported. I've noticed it since the v.3.x.x series.

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

This functionality is (partially) broken.

The only way I was able to receive an email was to set the group leader for that usergroup. Following the email link (or just browsing) to that usergroup screen yields no members waiting to be validated/approved.

Without setting the group leader, you would never know if someone requested membership to a usergroup, unless that member sent you a message informing of the request.

When the "Open Membership" check box is ticked, members are added automatically upon request.

No change, everything appears to be the same as before.

I also just noticed I'm unable to remove the group leader from the usergroup configuration.

Rats. I'm not sure I believe the bug isn't fixed (I expected it to work, or to crash and burn - but not stay the same), but I can see the leadership won't blank out.

I'm 100% sure I did fix the validation alert bug (just tested it). And this also fixes the cannot-remove-leader bug.

Remember the alert will go to the staff email address configured in the site options if there is no leader.

2 bugs stepped on. At least now an email is generated even if no group leader.

I'm carbon-copied on every email. Thankfully there isn't much email generated.

:offtopic:  That just made me think of something potentially not good…

Are newsletters sent out included in the carbon copy? Would a 1,000 newsletters sent out mean I would get 1,000 carbons?  O_o

the mail API has an exception flag, flagged in appropriate spots to avoid such issues
