I am really beginning to love this program… As someone else said, it seems to just expand beneath you!!

Is there any way of turning on a Membership Validation for new members thru the Admin instead of members self-validating via email?

In the site configuration screens (admin login)> setup>configuration you can set a field parameter that automatically joins a site member to the ocp site without any validation or with validation see "Require member validation" under setup>configuration>forum options

OR you can set it up so members can select groups to join at site join membership application time (Group is preseneted in a list of groups) and a group leader will do the validations.

OR you can set it up to have them join as a site member with no intervention and join a specific group later after they know what groups are doing. These can be with or without a group leader.

We couldnt see why any validation would be required to get low level security members or site members joined up but I guess different sites have different requirements. Whatever your requirement this system does it pretty much. The more you get into it the more little things you find which are really neat features.

There is also some very sophisticated stuff happening around member groups because various custom fields can be created and forced (or not) for fill in by prospective members.

The options take a while to find as they are vast so a fair bit of playing first will certainly help deploy a feature rich site. Perhaps one day there might be a dynamic global help file where you type in a question and it might give a number of option answers but in the meantime read the many many documents in the documentation section and come back often here…  O_o

Thanks OneRing.

The sophistication of this program is fantastic but the navigation is downright baffling at times. I find features one day, and spends hours the next looking unsuccessfully for the same feature.

However, I expect that is just experience. I have set up my own site (on which I have registered here with pleasure) but am having a lot of difficulty with it and will continue to barnstorm this site. However, I put that down to my own computer knowledge rather than specific faults of the program. Practice will make perfect. (I have set up a second site as a test site for learning about the features so I don't 'break' my public site).

Many thanks to OCPortal - it is a pleasure doing business!!

It does look very nice good job.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

I hate to reply/add to such an old thread, but I hate to open a new one since this is so close.

I have Validation turned on, and of course it works great.  However, is there any way of notifying the admin, or maybe the admin and a director of membership when there's a request for membership.  I know it shows up in the admin zone under items waiting to be validated, but is there a way of notifying via email?  I've searched and search and don't seem to be able to find it.

A notification is sent out in v8, so you just need to enable that for your personal account. In v7 and lower it was an email to the staff address.

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.
