A member on my site created a new post a couple of days ago and I just noticed that the view count is 2,300+, no way it could be anywhere near that.

I've used website clean-up tools to refresh the stats but it made no difference.

Any idea what the problem might be and how it should be corrected?

A new topic, not just a new post right? (As post view count is not tallied).

I have run a quick check to make sure it seems to work correctly and it does.

I have checked the code and the only line altering the t_num_views field (apart from at initiation) is a line in the topicview module:

Code

$GLOBALS['FORUM_DB']->query('UPDATE '.$GLOBALS['FORUM_DB']->get_table_prefix().'f_topics SET t_num_views=(t_num_views+1) WHERE id='.strval((integer)$id),1,NULL,true);

So I really think the topicview must have been called on that topic that many times. Probably a bot hammering it, or something similar such as a user using some kind of auto-refresh browser extension.

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Correct.

If it was a bot then I would have expected abnormally high figures in multiple topics which is not the case.

As for browser refresh, I checked the raw server logs and I could find no evidence that the topic was accessed excessively.

 O_o Strange O_o
