I am helping build a site that is going to offer a lot of downloads. On their main site page, they want to have several blocks that feature random items in specific categories.

Example:

BLOCK 1: Features clothing for your gaming character
BLOCK 2: Features facial and other body features for your gaming character
BLOCK 3: Features items for your gaming character

Therefore they have 3 download categories. HOWEVER, they have subcategories within these categories and also subcategories within subcategories.

Since the downloads don't use a number feature, is there a quick way to filter a category to use all subcategories under that category?

It would really suck if the webmaster has to add each category in the filter…

Example:

clothing, clothing/men, clothing/women, clothing/men/tops, clothing/women/tops, clothing/men/bottoms, clothing/women/bottoms, etc…
men, women, men/hairstyle, women/hairstyle, men/facial_hair, etc…
weapons, shields, weapons/longswords, weapons/shortswords, shields/small, shields/medium, shields/large, etc…

For download category #3, you would give a category filter of "3*" (I think, or maybe "3,3*").
Explained in more detail in our ocFilter tutorial.

  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.
