Question:

Let's say I have a usergroup setup for subscriptions at $9.95 a month, $8.95 per month paid bi-annually, and $7.95 a month paid annually. My question is if I add a bunch of extra features to the subscription area then decide to double all of my fees will this work automatically or do I need to do a bunch of manual labor?

In other words am I going to have to wait for each subscription to run out and manually cancel them and tell them to re-subscribe at the higher rate or will the system automatically pick up on the rate change, let them know, then charge them at the higher rate.

The only other option that I can think of is to create another subscription group, add the extra features to that group and let them subscribe to that if they want those features.

Your second option would probably keep your subscribers, imho. Unless you give them enough time to decide if they want to unsubscribe or keep their subscription and pay the extra prices (if it is determined that is how it works if you update the subscription with members already subscribed)

There's no technical solution with PayPal the way it is, but personally I would agree with Eric - if something new raises the service level and necessarily also the prices, just make like a new optional 'Platinum' service or something like that, then 'Super platinum' etc.

  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.
