Well-settled

Hate to be a bother. I haven't changed any templates as of yet, or actually did anything to the back end.
I clicked on a link earlier and got the error "SQL has went away"…. I backed out clicked again and everything was fine, or so I thought.
I then noticed the shoutbox threw a The requested page (error_500) is missing.
I clicked on "Edit this page", then "Add Block", it throws a The requested page (error_500) is missing.
I went into the Forums, clicked on "Members" and it throws a The requested page (error_500) is missing.

I went and posted in the forums, I got
"There was a problem retrieving the XML data:404: Not Found."
I was still able to post and everything is fine.

Is this my server., is there a fix? The sites working front end wise, but the backend I feel like a little old man with suction cups on his walker!

This sounds more like a server thing to me.
Specially the sql part.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

If it's on 4.1.3, it could be part due to a problem we've since fixed in 4.1.4. Deleting the data/.htaccess file resolves that in 4.1.3.
Otherwise 500 errors are difficult to diagnose and usually are a server thing. Often real error messages show up in server logs (e.g. your Apache error log).

"mySQL has gone away" can happen on servers that are running slowly, or where one of a number of mySQL settings has been set rather low. It's hard to diagnose without running direct tests, but if it happened after more than 10 seconds then it's probably due to a slow server.

"There was a problem retrieving the XML data:404: Not Found."
This sounds like there really is a file missing. Running the integrity check tool in upgrader.php should say which.

OMFG, LOL my site is so hosed!
I am begining to wonder if some of this is OCportals. I don't think siteground is use to running a CMS based around security?
I ran the upgrader. It said "Take a nap, there's so many things wrong, I am going to get a cup of coffee before I output the data".
When it was running the data on my screen ran out of ink and white paged.

O.K. being serious. For some reason /public_html/data I needed to chmod to 755. Everything is now working again, WTH? I didn't change this setting, AT ALL. It is throwing no errors now.
I also noticed for some reason OCportal mirroed itself in
/public_html/ (Where it really is)
/www
/public_html/old (the upgrader linked to this)
I doubt this is an OCportal issue. Actually, I can prove it
http://www.kindagreywolfsworld.com/loadtime/
This is a video of me logging into my account, then a friends.

The upgrader doesn't seem to want to change permissions, so I will do that manually and see what happens.

I am looking for another host as we speak.

The directory permissions thing is quite common although I can't explain why it'd just change. It's a pet peeve of mine that Apache doesn't be straight with it's error messages - 500 is way too cryptic.

The mirroring thing may be due to symlinks. That is they might all be the same directory in reality (www and public_html definitely will be, as this is common). Think of it like shortcuts in Windows.

Thanks for the video. I skimmed through it but I think I caught the gist- terrible speed problems there!

To log into a friends site, 30 seconds.
I was told to shut my firewall and anti-virus off, LOL!

Not to get off topic but I remember when I tried siteground, terrible terrible terrible.
I would never host with them again.

I have my site split between everity and hostpc and I like both of them. I have it split just in case one goes down the other one takes over which is nice.

I had to find out from IPS if that was allowed and they said it was fine and help me set it up, after the ips part of it was set up that way the ocportal part was easy.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.
