I have a question about upgrading the ocPortal program.

1) Should the database be upgraded prior to the site files, or vice-versa?

2) Should the program be upgraded step-by-step (versions in order, such as 8 RC6 > 8 RC7 > 8 > 8.0.1 > 8.1), or can it be upgraded in one step to the most recent version?

The reason behind this is one of my larger clients is running on ocP and the last upgrade I attempted crashed the site. I've been a little leery of attempting it again as everything seems to be working OK right now (7.1.6)

Thanks in advance for any help with this.

In friendship & success,
Erich

You can upgrade right from 7.1.6 to 8.1 in this case I believe but normally the upgrader will build you a package for upgrade based on any past version to present version. IE If you had v6 you tell it that and it will include all upgrades from v6 to 8.1 and put together  special package for you.

As always just make good back ups first in case something goes wrong.

Hi Duck,
Thanks for the reply. However, which one to do first - database or site files?

I believe that I tried to do the site files first last time, which caused database errors to the point where the site was no longer accessible.

If I do the database update first, would the same issue occur?

I realize that this needs to be done - just a little nervous about crashing the site again.

Thanks in advance,
Erich

The upgrader steps you through this:
Close site
Transfer files
File integrity check
Database upgrade
Theme upgrades
Open site

This is how I have always done it. You could conceiveably break the update into two parts – 7.1.6->8.0 and 8.0->8.1 but I don't think this is necessary.

As long as you have a good backup, you should be able to recover quickly from any issues you encounter.
