Oh where, oh where has MySQL server has gone? ...away, away, far away?

OcPortal …I have a problem

Something has happened at Elief and there was an unplanned maintenance session which has made scrambled eggs of my two websites. Of the 2 websites only the The Fascinating World of Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Creatures of all Kinds - Prehistorics Illustrated Dinosaurs
site is live so I'll start there. If you go to the front page it looks normal except recent updates and additions as well as new members since April 2nd are missing. The ADMIN ZONE says I am running ocPortal v6.0.3.

Here is what I get when I tried to clear the cache as instructed to do by Elief after their unplanned maintenance:

Expand: Critical error - bailing out Critical error - bailing out

So my question is what do I do now? I am sending in an email back to Elief to let them know I am not back up and working so perhaps they will have some additional info for me regarding the scrambled eggs.

We are also now a customer of Elief and host some sites. It looks like your DNS needs re-pointing to the new IP address they should have emailed you about. i.e You are currently looking at the old server, which has MySQL problems. That might take some time, then again if you do it, and reboot your machine, it should be better. Or if they host your DNS maybe you just need to reboot.
Anyway, that's my experience, they'll be able to help you much more with specifics.

You may find wrong file permissions on the new server. I have informed them about it, but if they haven't done a mass-fix yet, you may need to manually delete lang_cached/EN/*.lcd and themes/*/templates_cached/EN/*

@Jean, I believe they'll get things back quite quick, but definitely a big unexpected annoyance. I was cursing earlier myself at the sudden need to go and fix up various sites.

Then again, half the Internet is apparently down today due to Amazon EC2, so that's web hosting for you.

@friendly - these are just cache files, so it is safe to delete. lcd files, tcp files, and js/css files (these are only cache files when inside templates_cached/EN only).

Elief says that my sites are resolving properly from their location but I still have no access whatsoever even after flushing my DNS, cache and all the browsers.

I guess that this is like a new propagation of the DNS and I'll have to wait for the next "banana boat" to reach my Island with good news from the developed world!;)

useful trick is to validate your page from the w3c validator, see if the output looks right

its now the next morning and I checked the http://prehistoricsillustrated.com site and it appears to be up and almost back to it prior state. Still missing any new members joined since April 2nd and some info from the front page - That's all I can tell for now. I was able to perform operations such as using the tools to clear the cache which I was ERRORed out on yesterday. I apparently did not have re-point the DNS in this case. So I am 'back' with only minor damage to attend to.

The other website affected which is not live is http://davidlfriend.com and I am not able to get into it. I get the error

Critical error – bailing out

Could not connect to database (Access denied for user 'davidlfr'@'localhost' to database 'davidlfr_ocp')
Details here are intended only for the website/system-administrator, not for regular website users.
» If you are a regular website user, please let the website staff deal with this problem.

Depending on the error, and only if the website installation finished, you may need to edit the installation options (the info.php file).
ocProducts maintains full documentation for all procedures and tools. These may be found on the ocPortal website. If you are unable to easily solve this problem, we may be contacted from our website and can help resolve it for you.

ocPortal is a CMS for building websites, developed by ocProducts.

I can get into the ocPortal Installation Options editor but AFAICS I don't note anything odd there. How am I going to recover the site. When I FTP access it it looks like ocPortal is still there.

Is this still a Elief host issue or is it in my lap now and any suggestions as to where I go from here?

Friendly,

It is saddening that you still have to cope with problems after more than 24 hours.
For my part, the banana boat arrived through the night on the tide of DNS propagation and everything seems back to normal.

I found a good Global DNS Propagation Checker.
Helpful to determine the status of your domains.

Super news, Jean! Your site(s) are back and working - you probably had a lot more to loose than I did since the vast majority of my dinosaur site returned.

Thanks for the heads up on the propagation checker.

I emailed Elief to relay my other sites remaining condition and am awaiting their reply. So far I am glad I got one of the two back …but will be dismayed if I have to start all over with my http://davidlfriend.com website. I think I have the ocPortal files and probably the (or much of) content on the hosts server but how to get back in …well, that's probably my question.

Crashes don't seem to happen that often but when they happen this way it shakes up your confidence in lots of things.

I think I'm back…

Got into cpanel and used the repair database function - BINGO it was back online with a loss of my most recent gallery addition. I will have to recreate that but I have most of the info I need for that.

Funny that the CSS changes I had done most recently (about a week ago or less) are there but the gallery addition which was done before the CSS modifications are gone - go figure??

Anyway I am more than happy that this much has survived to face future crash(s)! The world still goes round and round.

With all this happening with Elief servers I am wondering if upgrading to 6.1 right now is the best time or not?

The response from Elief was good considering the assumed circumstances and it got me more or less back  online but it is sounding like Elief has their hands full of dealing with other issues like the ones Jean, ocPortal and I had. Maybe I should be waiting a few more days to see if there any other shoes to fall and if the world continues to rotate as usual?

Perhaps, waiting another week won't hurt anything  …but by then it may be ocP v6.1.1
