When I type a "search phrase" into the search box, it returns posts with all the words, but not the phrase

It makes it difficult to find out if my issue has been discussed previously. This is true both in the main search box in the nav bar at the top, and in the forum search box on the forum page, and in the "more" search form found from the forum page, choosing date as the sort field.

Just checked my own site. There I have the option to check the box "Find exact matches" which activates the boolean and string functions. It's not showing up here on ocportal.com.

We disabled it, but I am working on something cooler right now.

  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Okay, now if you use quotes or +/- notation before words, it turns on boolean search.

We turned it off before for performance reasons, but actually it is fine for the version of MySQL we are on because it supports indexed boolean searches.

I recently concluded it is much better to auto-detect whether the user wants to do a boolean search anyway, much better usability.

A followup report on search oddness on ocportal.com:

I am searching for info on creating a sandbox environment to test ocPortal changes before deploying to production. When searching the forum for the word sandbox, 365 days, I get a result of "15 posts." However, only 5 posts display. At the bottom of the page, the selection dropdown is set to 10 posts per page, and it shows there is a second page. Clicking "Next" yields this result:

Search – Posts

Your search for “sandbox” gave 0 results:

Your search yielded no results. Please try a less specific search.

Strange.

I upgraded our site, and it seems to have fixed it. We fixed quite a few search issues over the last few patches.

By the way, this topic is highly ironic - your post about the problem altered the search results to stop me reproducing it precisely  .
