open_basedir error?

version 7 will install fine but when trying to update or install fresh I just keep getting this error.

This was using the automatic install version that uses the install.php and data.ocp file. It also happens when upgrading in anyway.

PHP [2] file_exists() [<a href='function.file-exists'>function.file-exists</a>]: open_basedir restriction in effect. File(/home/hideaway/public_html/lang/langs.ini/sources_custom) is not within the allowed path(s): (/home/:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php:/tmp)

I don't know what I can do about this.

I think the problem here is that open_basedir restriction is on at the domain. If this is a shared server, you have to ask E-lief to set this out.

It is a bug actually. Normally in PHP if you accidentally treat a filename as part of a directory path when looking to see if a file exists under it, it just says there is no file underneath. With any open_basedir set, PHP has a fit.

This is also in my error log
[06-May-2012 03:45:21 UTC] PHP Fatal error:  Call to undefined function get_translated_text() in /home/hideaway/public_html/sources/zones.php on line 483

Anyway I downloaded the files.php provided, Since the open_basedir error occurs at step 7 I didn't want to get through the install to an error before replacing it, so I put it in the ocp file replacing the existing one.

Now it tells me the ocp file is the wrong version.

You can ignore that, it's just saying the file's been changed.

If something goes wrong at install, it's likely then further unexpected things can happen.

version 7 is available through my cPanel, but no matter how I try to install version 8 it simply won't work.

The host doesn't really have any idea either.

I'll build a new quick installer for you to try.

Sorry about the messing about. I should have realised the quick installer wouldn't pick up on the file right.

Attached is a new build, built with our normal process. It will claim to be 8.0.0, but actually it has all fixes since 8.0.0 was released.

Tempting to apply this to bring everything up-to-date. But is there any documentation that shows all patches made since 8.0 release? I though I had seen such a page but cannot find it now.

Just to be clear what I mean there, I don't mean that in a disparaging way… just that if you chase your tail on every little fix, you'll expend a lot of your time doing it, and probably need to ask a lot of questions and create some confusion due to having a non-standard install. I think a patch will be out soon, and that will be far more manageable. I think the only issues I consider notable at the moment are this install issue, and the downloader issue Fletch found (described as an RSS problem).

Right, I've finished catching up with things now.

v8.0.0 has proved stable, there were just a couple of bugs:
  • this one, on some servers
  • the downloader, on some servers
(as I thought)

I am going to release what we have here as 8.0.1 but I'm going to recommend existing users happy on 8.0.0 skip this release. I don't want people to waste their own time unless there's a reason to upgrade – there are enough frustrations using such a large platform . My concern really is making sure it installs smoothly for people.

Seems that release was out very quick. I don't think I am having any problems but it's been less than a day on my live site. I'm going to sit this one out, if possible.

Absolutely not! How else do you think I spice up my retirement days?

Will certainly complain loudly (oh, OK, maybe 'sotto voce'), but if something doesn't play right, I shall mention it here!

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

I'm hoping we see an 8.1 release before too long with the bug fixes and, at least, the following new features:
Anti-spam/spammer database
Grid layout in cc_embed
Dynamic filtering

Chris will wisely not comment on these and probably wants to hold up any release to availa "upgrade fatigue" but these are the things I am most anxious for.

I got it setup now using the updated version, but now when trying to remove the main RSS block I just get this

You don't have permission to access /oc/data/block_helper.php on this server.

This could be quite a few things. Nowadays hosts are putting a lot of weird restrictions on things.

Check:
  • The data directory doesn't have group write permission
  • The data directory doesn't have world/everyone write permission
  • The data/block_helper.php file doesn't have group write permission
  • The data/block_helper.php file doesn't have world/everyone write permission

Otherwise ask the host if there is some kind of modsecurity error coming up on this URL.
